RCRN + DDSOPT - [SOLVED]

haelfix

Question

So i'm pretty sure I have just isolated an incompatibility/glitch between RCRN v.36 and DDSOPTing the HRDLC1 and HRDLC2 textures as explained in the DDSOPT section on these forums.  (I used Z's settings and method etc)

I have done a clean install/clean save with fresh .inis.  Absolutely zero additional mods.  When using RCRN classic, there is some pixelation in some of the textures, in particular grey skies, certain sunrays and in some of the fog textures.

Disabling those packs removes the artifacts, and installing the usual unaltered DLC packs also removes the problem.

It's rather sad, b/c I have seen absolutely no problem or graphical artifact with these altered DDSOPT packs with any other lighting system.  All the textures look perfect, and the performance boost is significant.  Nevertheless something about RCRN is picking out tiny 1*1 textures and amplifying them.

It's possible of course that I have screwed up the DDSOPT process, but I can't seem to pick out anything wrong in the textures perse by inspection.

I haven't even used DDSopt yet. The Guide, IMO, isn't detailed enough and needs to be expanded. I get confused just reading it and since I've heard it's easy to screw up textures with it, I've just stayed clear of it until the Guide is better written.

@Farlo

I think revising the DDSopt guide should be a priority #2 for the next release. Though optional at this point, everyone boasts using it here on the forums and how great of a performance boost you can get. I think it's even more important for those who are just running the Baseline install to use it as they're the ones (like you and i) that are running most likely only 1GB of VRAM. In it's current form I don't find it that user friendly. :ermm:

It's not really user friendly, but using the basics is pretty simple.  At the very least getting the basics for this up, along with the MO guide are on my list, but first I need to install STEP and sort out the new mod list without TPC.

I'm almost positive the problem is only in one or two textures in the HRDLC set if at all.  The biggest thing that the guide needs to change is to update it with the new settings that is in the forum posts (zgradients etc), otherwise replication will be impossible.

It is also highly probable (>90% chance) that it was some installation mistake on my behalf to begin with, since in the other thread Z mentions he has no problem with the same setup.

I am not in front of my computer now, but I will try to isolate the specific texture, repeat the process and see if it goes away if I have time before xmas.
