Two Year Old Save - New Computer - Possible to revive?

Hello!
 
Skyrim Remaster made me nostalgic and I thought I'd jump in again into one of my most memorable playthroughs in Skyrim and breathe the nordic air once again.
The playthrough in question is a 90 hour save, used to be super stable(it crashed on me once or twice in that period), a slightly modified STEP setup, that I'd like to revive and continue playing, believe it or not.

Two things have changed though: the computer and the version of Skyrim, since Steam does not allow you to play the version of the game you want to(thanks Gaben).

 

I also haven't reinstalled everything I presumably installed when setting things up. I just copy-pasted the steam folder onto the SSD and changed the paths in Mod Organizer to fit the SSD drive.

 

THE PROBLEM: the game crashes at launch. I use the SKSE shortcut in MO. There are no missing ESPs. I can see the Menu Background for a brief second, not the menu itself, and then the window is gone.

 

Apologies if I come as a bit lazy. I remember fiddling with the game for weeks before I got myself the perfect, modded, game that ran like a dream. I remember how much time I've invested back then and I just don't have that time right now.

 

So the bottom line is:

  1. could it be something simple where a tip from an experienced user nails the problem? My gut tells me I'm forgetting something simple yet crucial.
  2. do I have to dive into things knee-deep once again to figure this out?
  3. just simply forget it and start modding from scratch/don't bother playing skyrim?

Just update SKSE first and see if that sorts it out. If not, the go through slowly, adding mods in blocks. Like all the UI ones, see if it runs, etc etc.

 

There's also things like save gave cleaners that might help, but use it as a last resort.

Few things I'd try:

 

1) Go to steam and try to validate the game cache. 

 

2) The SKSE fix isn't really needed any more with the Crash Fix mod. https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/72725/? Try downloading and installing that, following the directions on the page.

 

Does STEAM and all that seem to load up OK otherwise? There's also a possibility that if you still have old versions of mods, they may not run on the newest version of Skyrim either. You could try updating some mods and seeing how you go as well.

Alright. The Crash Fixer told me, that the line in enblocal.ini:

ExpandSystemMemoryX64 has to be false

Fixed that and now it crashed w/o any error messages.

 

Verified the game Cache and it reacquired some 3 files but that didn't help either.

 

The vanilla game launches w/o problems and I can ride into Helgen.

 

Is there a way to rollback to an older version of skyrim?

The last update to Skyrim was version 1.9.32.0.8 in March 2013. Was your game saved with a Skyrim version prior to this?

 

In the past (years ago) I was often able to use games saved with some previous versions of Skyrim. I did need to make sure I was using the current version for some of the mods I had. If you didn't update SKSE to the current version, for example, you need to update it as well as some of the mods that use SKSE (especially any mods that put dll files in the SKSE folder).

The game was saved on the 8th of October 2014. So that is not an issue, as it seems.

I assumed the game got updated since steam patched it once or twice recently w/o me even launching it.

 

So if nothing got updated... what's the deal? Oh dear me.

 

I of course can go and update every mod and SKSE but before I do that: I just copy-pasted the Skyrim folder. It nags me that some mods just can't find the right path to things I don't even remember installing.

 

What'll do now is try to pin down the mod that causes the crash(if it's just one) since the game launches fine with SKSE with mods disabled.

I have found some missing masters! In: ASIS, Batched Patch, Dual Sheath Redux Patch and ReProccer.

 

Figured out I need Java for ASIS, download in progress, and I also faintly remember there was a order in which you create those patches that if not done by that order it would screw the other ones. Should I just do it by the load order or something else?

 

I will update SKSE as soon as I deal with those. Don't want to change multiple things at once.

I tend to do those in the order of Bashed Patch, other Skyproc stuff, ASIS, DSR.

 

The other thing I just noticed: is that actually the order your mods appear in, ie your Load Order, or just your Mod List, which often gets presented in alphabetical order like that?

 

Cause if that's your actual load order you probably should be sorting it with LOOT too.

Alright, fixed the loadorder and the patches. Turned out I was using patch files from other profiles(wrong tick box in MO).

Now the game loads no problem but crashes after a save has loaded for a couple of seconds.

 

I remember the game used to crash like when the INI settings didn't match the last save(like uGridsToLoad) but I don't remember if I can check what INI settings I had been using in the last save.

You could always try the BethINI tool and/or a save game cleaner. 

 

BethINI: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/69787/? this will do all the suggested STEP/SRLE changes and has the added advantage of cleaning up the ini files and putting them in a more logical order.

 

There's several save game cleaners. You'd likely be best searching Nexus for those. I've not used any of them to suggest one.

The game runs smoothly and now that I have rediscovered the backup and restore buttons I have the correct loadorder and what mods replace which files. Fixed many skeleton issues.

 

One thing persists though: some textures do not load/load with a very bright purple "paint" on them.

 

Google told me that it's either a VRAM limit(Skyrim uses 3 out of 6GB, so it shouldn't be a problem)or an nVidia issue but I haven't found any further info/fixes for the latter. This being an nVidia problem seems plausible as my previous PC had an AMD card and it didn't have this issue.

 

Have you heard of that?

Purple images indicate you may be missing a texture for that object. Here's a random screenshot I picked up to demonstrate the effect. I think the first thing to do if you are using Mod Organizer is to ensure all of the BSAs are checked in the right pane (in the Archives tab) and you have the "Have MO manage archives" checkbox checked. It's at the top of the Archives tab just above the list of BSAs.
