I just recently completed a baseline STEP Core install following the guide as much as I could (skipped the mods that it said I could skip with ENBoost since it made me get that). It was working fine but I recently saved in Riverwood after talking to Sven and getting all his talk options out and now I can seem to load it. I'll freeze or it'll start loading fine with the music kicking in and everything but just not stop loading, one it just crashed to desktop.

I tried disabling the DynDOLOD stuff but when I started it up and went to load my file it said that it was depending on content that's no longer available, that sounded too dangerous to accept so I quit out and turned it back on.

Also tried loading my last save before that (an autosave just after leaving the starting cave), but it froze both times.

Current LOOT order, I think:

Trying to sort DOES actually offer changes but I was too concerned to accept because of the Bashed Patch and all.

If any more info is needed, I'll give it, I just don't know what's needed.

Updating in new post since I still can't find the edit button on the original post.

I managed to load my save by starting a new game and loading from the pause menu in there. Still, I'd rather not sit through the carriage ride every time so if anyone can help, it'd be greatly appreciated.

First, allow LOOT to sort your load order and accept any changes. Next, rebuild your Bashed Patch. Last, post the contents of your enblocal.ini file within spoiler tags:

Sorry for the delay in responding.

I did the following to rebuild the patch:

1) Opened LOOT (This time it just said "Error" with no description but worked fine afterwards) and accepted the sort changes.

2) Opened Wrye Bash.

3) Followed the steps on the wiki starting from 2 (presumed that since I've built it already I didn't need to re-enable the disabled stuff).

4) Dragged the "Docs" folder from Overwrite to "STEP Core Bashed Patch" (what I called it in the left pane), choosing to Move and Replace.

5) Ran LOOT again just to be safe, it said it made no changes.

6) Booted the game to test, trying to load the file gave me the "this save relies on content that's no longer present" message and choosing "Yes" from there lead to the same problem.

My enblocal.ini:

Try starting a new game to see if it gives you any issues. Feel free to use LAL to skip over the intro and get in the game faster for the test.

Sorry for the huge delay in responding, got caught up with various life stuff.

I started a new game and loaded up the save at the first opportunity (didn't get LAL because I was afraid of messing stuff up). I got the "some content missing" message but it actually loaded fine.

I played through a bit and my later save at Bleak Falls Temple seems to be loading fine, I guess it was because the town was a crowded area or something? Just want to make sure, don't want to have this problem again.

I'm chiming in here because I just had a similar experience.  I'd deleted Skyrim for a long time, as my last character was around Level 140 and I needed the space on my little 120GB SDD.

I just did a STEP:Core installation, and my character was Level 3, still in the wilderness between Helgen and Riverwood.  I quit because kids/life, and when I tried to re-load the savegame, I got the lovely ILS behavior.  I was able to load an earlier autosave from inside Helgen Keep, but when I tried to quickload (or regular load) my current game, the load screen actually froze just as the smoke appeared.  The behavior was reproducible every time I tried.

The solution is an SKSE plugin called Safety Load.  Apparently, the TESV engine's memory allocation function is vulnerable to unchecked race conditions, which lead to the ILS behavior.  This plugin replaces it with the regular C-language malloc().

Worked like a charm.

This likely could have been fixed with Crash Fixes or a proper ENBoost setup instead of Safety Load. Safety Load was tested to be in STEP but was rejected due to suspected CTDs caused by the mod, of which the author partially confirm was an outstanding issue but it got never fixed.
