MO2 and Nexus Links

It appears as though MO2 will not download mods from the Nexus via "Mod Manager Download" button. I believe this is user error and not necessarily a failure to function properly on MO2's part.

 

I may have installed MO2 incorrectly. It seemed to differ a little bit from MO in that it did not install to the folder I made for it in my SSE directory, nor did it ask where I wanted it to go. At the time, I was following a guide but it must have been outdated because the instructions didn't match up with my own experience. One thing I'm sure of is that it DID give me a prompt asking whether or not I would like to use NXM links, and I'm pretty sure (about 90%) that I hit yes.

 

What I ended up doing was unpacking all of the MO2 files/folders from the archive into the folder I created in the SSE directory, thinking maybe I knew what was best. Unbeknownst to me, however, it appears as though MO2 created a separate folder in AppData/Local.

 

Preliminary Google searches suggested running the nxmhandler.exe that came with MO2. I did this but I admit that I don't know what I'm doing or supposed to do. Another post elsewhere said, essentially, "Yeah, man, this happens. Just download manually and throw it in your MO2 Downloads folder." I can do that, for sure. I'd just like to know if I broke something and if I can fix it first.

 

(I'm all over the map with this modding process, I'm sorry. Thank you for your help and your patience. I do truly appreciate it.)

 

EDIT: I did refer to this post too. When I check the MO ini, it has the correct game and path listed. If that makes a difference.

Firstly I advise that you remove MO2 from proximity to the game you are modding. It doesn't matter which drive you use, if you have more than 1, but away from the game folder and any other UAC folders like "Program Files".

 

MO2 creates folders in %AppData%, this means you have an "instanced" version of MO2. Simply put the same set of programme files for MO2 are used for all the games you may be running but the specific folders for each game are stored in that location. ie. profiles, mods, downloads etc.

You can if you want run MO2 as "portable" which is more like the way MO1 worked with everything for each managed game in the same location with the game specific folders directly under MO2's main install folder.

 

Now, on to the nxm "issue". In the screenshot you posted do you see that the "Primary handler" is looking for the executable in a completely different location to that where MO2 is installed?

The location in the bottom input line should be looking for something like this, based on the information you have provided,

C:\Steam\steampapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\Mod Organizer 2\nxmmhandler.exe

Of course if you move your MO2 as I advise the path to nxmhandler should be the same as where MO2 resides.

If you use MO2 to handle any other games that same tool is used to point it to the correct game. You simply right-click and select "Add" and then follow the prompts.

what would be nice not sure this possible If you have MO1 open it will would download classic mods using the nexus link into MO1 and if you MO2 open it would download classic mods using the nexus link into MO2.

 

At the moment I have to keep re-registering the NNM Links depend on which version of MO I want to use quite annoying really.

In the MO folders there is a program called nxmhandler.exe. When run it will show a few things, the supported games and path and the primary Handler. 

 

The "primary handler" is the program registered as the executable used to handle links.

 

You should always use this instance to modify the supported game settings.

 

My guess is the "Skyrim" is under the "Other" setting and it is not properly set up.

 

Run that instance and look at the the game settings. You should see a separate line for each game. If not you have to point the program to the correct install of MO.

If it is listed under "Other" then you have to remove it from there and set a new path.

 

To do that right click in the window and select add.

A new window will open to select supported games.

Select the game in the left pane and in the right pane under "Select Handler Binary" point it to the game folder of the game.

Close the application and test.

 

i have attached a snapshot of my nxmhandler.exe, pardon the mess, I was doing a lot of beta testing.

Just real quick, @GrantSP, I am attempting to follow Tech's SSE guide which instructs placing MO2 in the game folder. Now this might be a stupid question, but it won't harm anything if I follow your recommendation, correct?

I'll be updating my instructions soon to change this. There is a bug (unknown to me at the time I wrote the guide) for some users when installing MO2 into the game folders. Seems most are choosing the "common" folder within Steam, but you can really install it anywhere you want.

I just tried to reinstall this and MO2 doesn't give me the option of choosing WHERE I want to install it. It automatically wants to instal itself to my AppData folders and I cannot fathom why.

Each time you run MO2, it will load the last instance you were working with. To install it as portable, you'll need to extract the MO2 files to the location desired, run the exe from that location, click the "new game selection" button on the menu (the first button), and choose "portable". This will run this MO2 install as a portable installation and no longer use % AppData%.

I reinstalled MO2 and checked the nxmhandler.exe. I had not changed anything except where I put the archived files upon downloading then went to download a mod off the Nexus just to test it. Worked perfectly. Showed up in MO2 AND in the correct folder. I'm so stoked, guys, thanks so much.

That's where I'll be putting mine, as well.

 

The only thing I'm aware of it causing issues with is Merge Plugins by Mator. Other than that, I've experienced no issues with it in AppData.

Would it not be a good idea to avoid appdata if for no other reason than its a system folder and hidden by default in Windows.
