I could use some recommendations on this one. What's with the Profiles and whatnot? Does it matter whether I have the HRDLC installed or not? What if I've already run DDSopt-based optimization?

TBH, I would spend the time to learn DDSopt instead. It's more featured - although it isn't as easy to use, it produces better results.

Just to clarify -- there's no reason to run this if I already ran my textures through DDSOpt and my BSA through BSAOpt?

Yes, there is absolutely no reason.

I put a page in the DDSopt guide here with a discussion of the differences between OT and DDSopt

I am unsure where to post this, but this seams like a likely spot. I ran Optimizer Textures on my Vanilla Skyrim Data Folder, and in the logs I tracked down and copied these errors: DAWNGUARD.BSA: textures\terrain\dlc01soulcairn\dlc01soulcairn.8.-20.37_n.dds ... Error: Direct3D device faill DAWNGUARD.BSA: textures\terrain\dlc01soulcairn\dlc01soulcairn.4.24.-47_n.dds ... Error: Direct3D device faill SKYRIM - TEXTURES.BSA: textures\clutter\blackreachmushroom02_g.dds ... Error: Direct3D device faill SKYRIM - TEXTURES.BSA: textures\terrain\sovngarde\sovngarde.4.24.-32_n.dds ... Error: Direct3D device faill SKYRIM - TEXTURES.BSA: textures\terrain\sovngarde\sovngarde.4.12.0.dds ... Error: Direct3D device faill SKYRIM - TEXTURES.BSA: textures\terrain\tamriel\tamriel.4.68.-84_n.dds ... Error: Direct3D device faill SKYRIM - TEXTURES.BSA: textures\terrain\tamriel\tamriel.4.-44.40.dds ... Error: Direct3D device faill SKYRIM - TEXTURES.BSA: textures\terrain\tamriel\tamriel.4.-88.72.dds ... Error: Direct3D device faill SKYRIM - TEXTURES.BSA: textures\terrain\tamriel\tamriel.4.60.64_n.dds ... Error: Direct3D device faill SKYRIM - TEXTURES.BSA: textures\terrain\deepwoodredoubtworld\deepwoodredoubtworld.4.-3.7.dds ... Error: Direct3D device faill Now I was able to track down good versions of these files but I have no idea how to get them into their respective .BSA's. Suggestions?

Use loose files instead of bsa archives ? If you absolutely must have them in there then use another utility to repackage them into one.

So take the BSA's out of Skyrim/Data and .7z them to drop into MO, let mo unpack and organize them into folders, then remove folders from MO and drop into Skyrim/Data?

No that would be overkill. You only need to extract the textures.bsa... you do not really need to take any of the others out. Just let MO unpack them (Or another program that can unpack it), create a .7z and make a mod and install it using MO. No need to copy it into the data folder... since that kinda ruins the point of using MO in the first place.

Ok thanks, I will do that, I was just thinking of keeping the Skyrim folder as the base, MO profiles as the STEP:CORE, STEP:CORE +.

That leaves me with one more question however, where to place Dawnguard mod and Skyrim mod in the MO/STEP:CORE lineup? Above unoficial patches perhaps?  Skyrim then Dawnguard?

Is there any reason for us to keep this in extended, since we recommend and use DDSopt, which does the same thing but better?
