Fixes for Skyrim - UNDER INVESTIGATION

torminater

Question

Hey guys,

found a source on the internet saying it knows fixes for everything and anything in skyrim here's all the data they threw out (I posted it here cuz their website was always redirecting me to some commercial junk...)

I would like to test all of those things recommended but it's kinda hard to simulate game crashes on a different rig than the one causing problems...

Fixing Skyrim Crashes, Freezes, Errors, Steam crash, No Sound, Lags, Choppy framerates

(UPDATE) The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Universal Startup crash fix (TESV.exe stopped working):

Check this out, this has been a working solution for those who have been encountering crash errors when launching the game. Before you proceed through the rest of the fixes here, try this first:

  • In Windows 7, go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound
  • You will see your default sound device. Click it, then click properties.
  • Go to the Advanced Tab, make sure the default format is set to 44.1Khz 16-bit.
  • Hit Apply/OK, then run Skyrim.
If that doesn’t fix it for you, run through the solutions listed below. If all else fails, be sure to leave a comment below and we’ll so how we could help. Be sure to check back often as we will be updating this solution list.

Problem #1 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Crash Fix – Crash to Desktop upon Launch / Startup

If you’re game randomly crashes upon launching the game, ensure or try the following:

  • Update your nVidia / ATI graphics drivers
  • Turn off SLI / Crossfire
  • Try using only one GPU first (turn the other one off via your graphics control panel)
  • Disable anti-aliasing and filtering
  • Disable V-sync
  • Disable background apps, and turn off your anti-virus software
  • Try changing the compatibility to Vista SP 2
  • Exit, disable, or uninstall FFDshow (it’s an audio/video controller, check if you have it installed)
  • Run through our list of If you’re using a newer laptop that’s using an nVidia Optimus card, try checking your Optimus settings.

  • Open the “nVidia Control Panel†from your start menu.
  • On the lefthand side, under “Select a task…â€
  • Open the “3D Settings†tree, and select “Manage 3D Settingsâ€
  • On the righthand panel, click the “Program Settings†tab.
  • Under “1. Select a program…â€, click “Addâ€, navigate to your installation folder and navigate to the application / exe file.
  • Under “2. Select the preferred graphics…â€, choose “High-performance NVIDIA processorâ€
  • Then (VERY IMPORTANT!) click “Apply†in the bottom right.
  • Launch the game.
Problem #7 How to force disable V-Sync in Skyrim

In the SkyrimPrefs.ini file (location in Problem #8 below), add the following parameter after the last line: iPresentInterval=0

Save and start Skyrim.

For Windows 7 and Vista users:

First of all, update your sound card drivers. If doing that doesn’t clear up the problem, make sure you have volume set to max for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in the volume mixer (click on the little speaker icon in the bottom-right of your screen in the system tray). If you’re in-game, just alt+tab out of the game and check if The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is set to max in the volume mixer.

Another tip you could try is to go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Communications Tab then select the “Do Nothing†radio button to permanently fix this issue.

For Windows XP users:

Reduce hardware acceleration, or set your speakers to Stereo.

Problem #9 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Mouse Fix – Reverse / weird mouse acceleration problem

To quickly fix this, try shutting off your mouse-specific software from Logitech, Microsoft, Razer, and the like. Also try a lower polling rate, sometimes this is switchable on the bottom-side of the gaming mouse.

If above doesn’t work, try this:

  • Go to your Steam Directory > steamapps > common > skyrim > Skyrim.
  • Create a backup of the SkyrimPrefs.ini file.
  • Open the file, then scroll down to where it says [Controls] and find bMouseAcceleration=1
  • Change to bMouseAcceleration=0
Problem #10 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim FPS Fix – The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Lags, freezes, or has poor FPS performance

Disable vsync and antialiasing on fifaconfig.exe after enable/force antialiasing on AMD Vision Engine Control Center (AMD/ATI) or Nvidia Control Panel (nVidia),finally enable/force tripple buffering and vsync on D3DOverrider(Download Here)

Alternatively, press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to bring up the Task Manager, go to processes, select the game’s respective exe file and set priority above normal or higher. You must do this everytime you play the game.

Problem #11 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Cannot Install The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Please ensure that you’ve uninstalled The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim from your PC, then try again.

Problem #12 How to enable Ambient Occlusion in Skyrim

The following solution courtesy of Simply disable the Xbox 360 controller in the game options.

Save and start Skyrim.

Problem #15 How to manually tweak Skyrim FOV settings

In the skyrim.ini file (location in Problem #13), go to where it says [General] and below this, add the following parameter:

fdefaultfov=XX (where XX is the FOV value you want to change to). Save and restart Skyrim.

That’s all the The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim crash fixes we have for now, but we’ll post more as soon as

Hmm. Activates maximum scepticism mode :geek: This looks like a lot of rehashed and speculative information, pasted up to get hits for their commercial junk.

I have a lot more faith in the Z-fighting tweaks you've developed with your own patient testing.

Some of the simple tweaks, like the FOV settings, do work, but are already well known. It might be good to add things like that to the wiki. The 'fixes' that involve resolving crashes by running in compatibility mode and such like, sound a bit tenuous. As you say, we can't really test them.
