DDSopt optimization taking too long

Pyro2008

Question

I've searched around and understand that after a bit of time the estimated time should drop, however it hasn't yet. I've let the application run overnight (8.8 hours so far) and it is only 1/3 complete with an estimate of another 25 hours. Any idea what might be the issue?

This is a clean install of Windows and I followed the DDSopt guide completely. I've actually used this guide once before but accidentally left the file on the wrong drive when doing the clean install. The last time I followed the guide it estimated about 18 hours and dropped quickly, taking maybe 1-2 hours.

All Windows updates are installed and drivers are up-to-date.

i7 950 OC to 4.2Ghz

6GB DDR3

Crucial 256GB M4 SSD

Windows 7 64Bit Pro

Windows 7 65 Pro

Still running atm, almost at 800 minutes running and estimating another 1300. However, looking at the optimized folder, it looks like it has already processed the HD textures. Right now it is just starting to process the STD. I wonder if there is something wrong with the STD textures that is causing this to take so long.

If I just let it finish, which I dont really want to do considering the length of time, how would I tell if everything was optimized correctly?

My concern isn't just that the process is taking long but that the textures are going to be incorrect or corrupt.

Yes, I am remoted into the computer right now. It processes one file every few seconds atm. Current both the HD folders are complete. It is currently on the architecture folder of STD.I used DDSopt to extract the files from the BSA then to optimize. Another thing to note, last time I used this application was on my Windows 7 install that had been established for some time. When I started, it ran fine. Now, I am using a clean install and when I first went to use the application it gave an error. I dont remember the exact wording but following the VCRedist 2010 x64 link, installing and then adding a security update resolved the issue.

Here are the log files from extraction:

OK' date=' then it is running just fine. Sounds like a sluggish I/O. perhaps the HDD is heavily multitasking (e.g., virus scan, defrag, file serving).Suggest you just let it finish and fix the larger I/O issue after![/quote']OkThat's weird though as it's the same hardware, software and drivers as in my previous install.Edit: Just checked my disk resources and aside from some spikes, everything looks ok. Maybe you see something that I dont?

FYI, please link to content rather than attaching content. We have a descent thumbnail viewer incorporated (just click the picture icon in the editor and enter a link). If you need an internet repository for content, try DropBox, it is free. If you do not use it, let me know, and I will invite you (we both get 500 Mb of additional space this way  )

Your disk usage is fine at the moment you took the pic, but perhaps earlier in your DDSopt process there was another process holding things back.

Total time to process vanilla textures on a modern system should not exceed 4 hours (mine ran in about 2 hours).

DDSopt is currently under revision with boasts of 2-3x speed improvements and additional features.

Yes I use dropbox, since the feature was available through the forum I figured I would use it. I have removed the attachment.

Yeah, it's just throwing me off that it still says another 1300 minutes ... it starts to go down then springs back up. As said before, my main concern was whether it is creating errors or corrupting the files. I wasn't sure if I should let it continue and use these files or get to the root of the issue and try optimization again later. I have a general idea how the application works based on the wiki but didnt know how well it would catch errors if there was a hardware/driver issue.

Since I am using the STEP guide, it takes awhile to get everything installed and configured. I didn't want to go through that process just to find my optimization failed and I have to start over.

Anyways, thanks for the info!

Edit:

Yeah, I believe it is going to take a considerable amount of time more. It JUST finished with the architecture folder after a couple hours. My CPU usage is down, my HD usage is down and my ram usage is down. It just doesnt seem like the application is working at full throttle.

As previously stated you do not want to run anything else while this going on, similar situation to creating a terabyte zip file or burning a dvd, rendering a 3d image, etc these tasks take the entire system to accomplish.

Yeah cause I am hovering at around 17% CPU and its set to realtime. Nothing else is running and in fact I disabled almost all applications from loading on startup. I also disabled my antivirus when I started.

I know my CPU can be maxed by other applications. Remoting in now, I just loaded a couple other applications and CPU usage shot up.

I wonder if I am missing some other file or Windows patch. Aside from install errors, nothing with my system has changed except having just been clean installed.

Before clean install, DDSopt ran fine, now it doesnt.

Weird

maybe a stupid question but are you using 64 bit version of DDSOpt rather than 32bit (iirc it had two versions) - would this account for the slowness and using less resources?

I found the problem, it was actually a bios setting. Speedstep was not acting properly, which is weird because the option was enabled with my last install and everything ran fine. Regardless, I disabled the option and the files processed much faster. It still took 6 hours though, so maybe something else in Windows is causing conflict process handling, causing further issues with speedstep.

Ill have to look more into the issue but its working now for the most part.

Thanks for the help all! Had it not been suggested that the CPU should be maxing, I wouldn't have found the issue!
