Forum Layout

Spock

Question

Since the other thread got locked and I couldn't find another topic of this sort I thought I'd just start it.

I'm sitting about 2 meters from my 30" monitor, I have to zoom to compfortably read at that distance and my resolution. The line spacing of the forum seems fairly large, information is mostly spread vertically. When I zoom in to the point where the subforum list lines up with the right end of my monitor I can see only very few threads. This makes navigating the forums more complex for me because I can simply see less information at once with the same font size. I would much prefer if the boxes representing subforums would align with the right end of my browser, scaling with zoom and the recent topics would go elsewere.

Also the palette option to the left of the forum distracts my vision. And maybe category headlines with more contrast would be desirable too.

I say this without having tested any different themes, but I usually browse the forums as guest.

[edit]Also line spacings and thus layout of posts appear different in the editor then they do in the post. It would be helpful if they didn't. Generally the font size seems small compared to the geometry of less important things in the forum (like avatars etc.)

I would say this is a "not so common" setup so I'm not sure it anything can be done for it. The majority of user will be setting just a few feet away from their monitors.

This can be turned off in your settings.

This is true, but seems to be true for most IPB forums. Nexus is the same way.

I would also add that we are looking at some better options for interim skins. We'll definitely make a more space-efficient version avalable by default very soon. Until then, you have two choices, so the IPB default is probably a better utilization of horizontal space than the Klar dark theme.

I was able to get a little vertical space out of the dark skin and a lot more horizontal space.

If the majority agree, I'd also like to be rid of the Recent Topics column, which wastes a lot of horizontal space for little value, IMO. I just find new threads using the forum icons.

In view new content the columns are the same size, but the check box is just farther right. There is a bunch of unused space. If the second column where the users that made the comments could be moved closer to th check boxes and then the topic column stretched a bit, that would be awesome.

Good work guys!

I have (hopefully) successfully converted all applicable member accounts to their proper role and permissions statuses ... I also worked with the forum CSS more today and toned down many of the stark contrasts that existed previously in the Klar theme that we are presently using while we wait for the official STEP theme that s4n will produce as time allows (ETA unknown).

Typeface should now match the wiki, and text should now be more subdued in most places ... where it is not, I have not been able to determine the source. THe Klar theme is now the default, without any substandard options available.

I've found a bit of a problem with this. If you changed the skin you use to one of the other skins, there's now no option to change the skin to the Klar theme, so you're stuck with whatever theme you were using.

Zed: If a member chooses a skin, that skin will be their default no matter what you set the global default to... Unless you outright delete the others (which I wouldn't recommend, especially not the mobile one)

Speaking of forum layout, why did the "Support and Troubleshooting" and "Republic of STEP" subforums get swapped with the migration anyway?
