A Song of Ice and Fire

So since Kryptophyr prodded the anthill with her thread about the Thrones intro I've taken the liberty of reading the books (again) during mealtimes and before bed (roughly 2 hours) and finished it, I must say I disliked "A Feast for Crows" the most, there was just something about it. Right now I'm trying to decide which I like more "A Storm of Swords" or "Dancing with Dragons". Which is your favorite book so far?

I'm not sure I have a favorite.  I've read the books so many times back to back that the division between the books is somewhat blurry.  Definitely some favorite scenes, but the characters and story lines that I enjoy most tend to vary from book to book.  It's by far my favorite fantasy series,  though I've also recently become enamored of Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight series (which I would highly recommend to anyone waiting around for Martin's next book).

Stormlight series is epic. Just finished the 2nd book, and now have to wait for a few years for the next one. Hate that feeling. In any case, def one of the best fantasy series out in a while. If you like GoT give it a shot.

I purged myself of memories related to the GoT books, just to keep the tv series fresh. I didnt find any one book memorable, just parts in each book.

Does anyone here read the Second Apocalypse books by R. Scott Bakker? If you like dark gritty brutal mature fantasy this is about as crazy as it gets, miles ahead of others in the genre. Better than GoT or Malazan series, and far more intelligent as well.

I think the first one, "A Game Of Thrones" is my favourite. I didn't enjoy the second one much, mainly because I was still expecting it to conform to the format of the stereotypical fantasy epic. It wasn't until Rob Stark met his end that I realised that we weren't in Kansas any more.

Once I realised that ... they're all excellent books. But the first one is still leading the pack. Although A Dance With Dragons gave it a run for its money.

I just hope he gets the next one out the door in less than ten years. Old George RR isn't getting any younger.

No! Don't rush him, he kills a Stark every time someone does, lol.

But technically the series has slowed down to half a book a season, if they continue with their current pace it'll be another two years or so before they've caught up.

I never read past the first book because I'm not a fan of Martin's writing, but I watch the show and I'm pretty much done with the Starks. I'm all in on the girl freeing every slave in the east. She will probably go crazy at some point due to inbreeding, but until then she seems to the only person doing actual good in the world. Or maybe I'll just end up rooting for the white walkers.

I was listening to podcast a while ago and one of the guys said that Danerys is conquering all these amazing cities to build her army. Then she's going to get to King's Landing and realize that the places she just conquered were way better.

I have stayed away from most spoilers, but I'm not a huge fan so it wouldn't bother me too much. I already know

what happens to Lady Stark.

Other than that I've stayed away from most of it, just lucky I guess.

To be honest the only fantasy series I've really ever loved is TES and I only like Morrowind and Skyrim. Some of this stuff just goes on way to long and is super weak thematically. Not even sure that GoT has a theme, unless it's that family is awful and will only lead you to disaster.
