Fireworks

Just FYI:

No US location likely matches Lincoln, Nebraska when it comes to home-use fireworks insanity.

There is a WAR in this town, and I swear we are being bombed now and for the past 3 solid hours. From a high point in town, one can see the entire town choked with smoke and light. Not a single peaceful patch of darkness.

This is a VERY red state, and these people just can't get enough of blowing **** up ... YEEEE HAW!

I'm in LA so the rules are a bit more strict but that hasn't stopped a very loud bang followed by sirens at least every 20 minutes. We haven't let any of the animal's outside today lest they go apeshit from the noise.

This is the first year that I haven't heard a single firework being set off, not only last night, but over the past week. We've always had a ban on fireworks within city limits, but it takes a massive fire that takes out hundreds of homes for folks to pay attention. Unfortunately, due to the drought conditions and the still on-going fire fighting, no fireworks from the peak this year.

Here, here. I'll drink to that.

I hear Waldo Canyon is near 90% contained now with roughly 350 homes in ashes.

The firefighters have been awesome, and have been containing it much faster than they originally expected. It really is amazing considering the terrain, where there just is no way for folks to get access to areas, and you rely on retardant drops.

It's even more amazing since they have had to maintain lines that were defensive in order to keep flying embers that jump highways from continuing the blaze. There was one case where embers jumped over a lake and started spot fires half a mile away.

Some of the pics from the fires are truly frightening. We have nothing equivalent here in europe, and to see something like that... Entire hills of rolling fire, I wish the best of luck with containment.

Been in the US twice during 4th of July (in alabama, i have deep south family), lots o fun. We have a equivalent independence day in my home country of Switzerland, but nowhere near as fun as in the US. BBQ and beer isnt in the swiss mentality lol.

Since i live in the Netherlands atm, have to rely on certain days where the celebrate the queen and the monarchy (of all the damn things..), but the dutch sure do know how to throw a party.

I've never seen anything like in real life. I'm probably about 6 miles from the interstate, and it's probably another 8 or so to the start of many of those ridges. The first night I could really see the glow in the night sky, it was so very eerie looking. One night when I got off work (which is right next to the interstate), I could see the flames, and we're still a good ways north from the major location of where the fires hit the homes. Add to that the glow through the clouds of smoke, and I tell ya...if I had just come out of a cave after decades, I would've probably swore that Armageddon was upon us.

But, it's at least 95% contained now, and they have found the source of the fire which was near a hiking trail, though no details have been released yet. But on the news last night they were stressing for folks to call in if they were in the area on the day it started. With all of that and the fact that there were no thunderstorms on that day or prior, it had to have been caused by someone. Whether intentional or accidental, I guess time will tell.
