Launching from SKSE with steam mods installed

frihyland

Question

This is a Steam issue and not a BOSS or SKSE one, the fix applies to all steam mods.

  • Launch skyrim from steam and let it validate and download all mods
  • Take a nice coffee break or alternately lie prostrate in obeisance to the Steam Overlords
  • Do not close the launcher
  • Launch BOSS and reorder anything new or that was updated
  • Launch SKSE and play Skyrim.

Could also just copy the entire Skyrim folder to a different location and run/manage it from there. Let steam do whatever it wants to it's own install, and let us do whatever we want to our copied install :). And when you want a steam workshop mod, just copy(or cut) and paste the .bsa/.esp files from the steam install to the copied install. But for the most part I keep the steam install pretty barebones, or use as a testing ground sometimes.

Yeah, I currently do it using SIS with a vanilla install with just 2 Steam mods at the moment, but it just adds another step to the equation and I wanted it as simple and universal as possible.

SIS gives a greater degree of control that I do recommend however.

Edit: After using SIS for a while it seems pretty slick and uses very little space indeed although creating and changing profiles is not what I'd call quick.

Hmm SIS is pretty slick but Steam is just so insidious, it tries to download the mods anyway even if there is no modslist.txt (I forget the exact name), it stores too damn much information in the cloud and you can't easily control it.

You need to only use the launcher on your Steam Mods profile to avoid making a mess, use skse to launch from other profiles.

Skyrim Launcher accesses your profile to determine if you are subscribed to any mods in the Steam Workshop every time (it has to do it that way to determine if there are updates). So, it's pretty simple...unsubscribe from the mods to prevent the launcher from attempting to download the mods. Add them to your Favorites to allow easy tracking.

"it has to do it that way to determine if there are updates" Does it do this if you say no to any updates in your settings?

If it was that easy, then my Skyrim Unplugged would prevent updates to subscribed mods too.

Unfortunately, Steam settings do not affect the Skyrim Launcher, and SL checks Steam Workshop every time it is launched without fail. The only way to fully prevent it is to block it's communication with Steam, but that may render the game unplayable (don't know for sure, never tried).
