Regarding "Guide:Skyrim Launcher"

I'm a little confused by this instruction:

  • Under [View Distance] tab, make sure Object Detail Fade is UN-checked and adjust grass to maximum with all other settings approximately half of maximum.

https://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:Skyrim_Launcher

Now, is this for a specific reason or based on the minimum hardware requirements?

I'm asking because I'm refreshing a few things in my configuration for Skyrim because my GF thinks ENB's are too "gawdy". So I'm redoing the opening parts from the STEP guide, Launcher, ini's, GPU Driver, and ENBoost. And I intend to add the zFightingFix( https://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:Z-Fighting) w/ uGridsToLoad=7.

Would it be safe to just allow it to default to "Ultra High" and just drop Anisotropic Filtering to 4. Then proceed with the full ini guide(https://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:Skyrim_INIs)?

By the way, I'm 100% stable with STEP installed perfectly, with the full ini guide, and the zFighting + uGrids7. Just wondering if I could leave the Launcher settings maxed as well without conflicting with whatever it's reduction was intended to prevent.

EDIT: I've never needed "Support" so I realized after this had already gone through that there is such a place and I've posted incorrectly.

P.S. This seems to fix the FoV issue:

1920x1080

Skyrim.ini

  • [Display]
  • fDefaultWorldFOV=81
  • fDefault1stPersonFOV=81

SkyrimPrefs.ini

  • [General]
  • fDefaultFOV=81

From the main guide where it links to the launcher guide:

This is a conservative preset that will facilitate a smooth game once STEP is configured initially according to this guide (i.e., what does not tax performance now may be burdensome later). More extensive INI tweaking can be done after STEP is set up and verified as running smoothly.

So if you already know your system will be able to handle the sliders being set to full, there's no reason to set the to half.

The guide explains that it's to make sure you can raise or lower them to increase performance or quality later.

I actually noticed this in an offsite ini guide last night. Not sure if it should go in the ini guide or at the end where it mentions forcing FOV, but it would be a lot easier than forcing it through the console every time you start a new game. Thanks for reminding me of that.

Ah, I must have overlooked this element, I'll just leave them maxed then. Thanks.

No problem. I use this every time I re-tweak my ini's. Works very well. I just didn't see a need to harass a current thread, or start a new one just to put it out there.
