DDSopt ini confusion

I am beginning the STEP core for the first time and am new to DDSopt. During installation it says to make sure and update to the latest version of DDSopt ini. when that link is clicked the instructions say to copy and paste into the same directory as the executable. Exactly which part of this page must be copied and pasted ? Much of it looks like gibberish to me and a more detailed and thorough instruction would be most appreciated. I don't even know when I am going to need to use this tool or if it is something that runs all the time. I don't know if I must have these ini whatevers copied and pasted before I run the program or will it tell me which of these I need. I see stuff about WATER and Pure Waters and other mods that are not even installed yet. Can anyone give me more understanding of this please?

If you're using the STEP Optimized Vanilla Textures from our Nexus page you don't need to mess with DDSopt unless you're just wanting to learn it.

The ini gives the DDSOpt rules about which types of (or specific) files not to try to optimize.  Apparently (to me) over time STEP members and other contacts have played around with optimizing different Skyrim (and Fallout) textures and they have discovered that certain files do not optimize well, so the ini provides rules for those files in order to make sure that when DDSOpt is used that it works most effectively with as few negative consequences as possible.  The author of DDSOpt stopped working on DDSOpt a long time ago, so having an updated DDSOpt ini file and updated DDSOpt batch files are currently ways to keep DDSOpt up to date.

Did you read through the DDSopt Guide?? ... or did you just jump to the INI?

 

The guide explains much about DDSopt as well as the INI. We don't go into how INI configurations work, because that is relatively common knowledge. If you understand the basics of how DDSopt is supposed to work, then the INI and INI settings will make much more sense.

 

Programs don't care about or utilize irrelevant INI settings, and there is evidence that the INI does not work in all ways as expected (see the guide).
