FNIS troubleshooting

johnsmith

Question

I'm trying to update FNIS Behavior in mod organizer, but I keep getting this directory error no matter what I try. Any advice? Thanks!

I have since installed FNIS V5 FIX1, but I got pretty much the same error(picture below). The reason I don't have any other mods is because I have reinstalled MO since I tried other mods. I can download other mods and get them to work, but I keep running into problems with just FNIS not completing "Update FNIS Behavior."

In Mod Organizer, click the Configure executables icon (the two cogs), click on the one that runs GenerateFNISforUsers.exe and double check the Start in path. This should either be blank or the same path that contains the GenerateFNISforUsers.exe file. In other words:

Binary: C:\Games\Mod Organizer\mods\FNIS Behavior V5 5 -- ALWAYS necessary\tools\GenerateFNIS_for_Users\GenerateFNISforUsers.exe
Start in: C:\Games\Mod Organizer\mods\FNIS Behavior V5 5 -- ALWAYS necessary\tools\GenerateFNIS_for_Users

This is somewhat of a shot in the dark, but I remember getting this error when I mistakenly entered a different path in the Start In textbox. If the Start in textbox is blank, it should be fine.

I also notice you have gender specific animations checked. Have you actually installed any gender specific animation mods yet?

Make sure the entry to the current executable that you have in the 'Executable List' is actually pointing to the same exe that is currently loaded by the active FNIS mod.

You have FNIS Behaviour V5.5 --ALWAYS Necessary as the supplying name according to the console but I would imagine the folder that is pointing to another location in the 'Binary' field of the 'Executable List'.

It is important to have ONLY one installation of FNIS.

I only have one installation of FNIS Behavior. I havn't installed any specific animations yet. This is my first time using MO, I was following Gopher's installation videos until I got stuck on FNIS(I was using NMM before.) For "start in" I have blank and for "Binary" I have this:

 C:\Program Files (x86)\Mod Organizer\mods\FNIS Behavior V5 5 Fix 1 COMPLETE\tools\GenerateFNIS_for_Users\GenerateFNISforUsers.exe

You might try running it again without Generic Specific Animations checked to see if this helps. I doubt it will change the outcome, though. Just to double check, have you run the Skyrim Launcher so that the game sets all the registry entries and such that FNIS needs to find the data folder?

In any case, I'll download the latest FNIS 5.5. Fix 1 Complete tomorrow and try it as well. This should be the complete version of FNIS, so it's odd that you're getting invalid directory name. i can't think off the top of my head which directory name it thinks is invalid (and it doesn't help that it's keeping this information secret).

I would like to have examined this console entry about the missing Default profile.

Please examine the 'Profiles' folder and verify there is a 'Default' profile. If one is missing just create a new folder with Explorer.

While you do that could you please also provide the contents of your 'Logs' & 'Profiles' folders and the modorganizer.ini. Just zip them all together and host it on Copy.com or similar.

There is something definitely not right with your installation, the latest screenshot shows XP32 trying to load, yet it isn't active in the list.

If your system CAN run 1.3.11 then I advise you to use that.

Haha, sorry about the XP32. I was tinkering with MO before I tried reinstalling it. I installed 1.3.11 and still got the same "ERROR(5): The directory name is invalid", but I got a couple more errors with 1.3.11. I'll include the log at the bottom too. I also have those files on copy.com.

Couple of things to fix before we can proceed.

  1. The copy.com link is broken
  2. Since you are on Vista you may have some functionality messed up as MO doesn't fully support it. 1.2.18 may be your only choice.
  3. Check that your Anti-virus package isn't meddling with the folders used by MO. Set an exemption for it if necessary.

The log file you posted doesn't really show anything, but the log in the zip seems to tell a fuller story:

DEBUG (00:49:17.0914): create process (w) null - ".\hkxcmd.exe" convert -v:WIN32 "temporary_logs\0_master.xml" "0_master.hkx" (in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\data\tools\GenerateFNIS_for_Users) - hooking

DEBUG (00:49:17.0914): process failed to start (267)

INFO (00:49:17.0929): Windows Exception (e0434352). Origin: "C:\Windows\syswow64\KERNEL32.dll" (769ae733). Last hooked call: unsigned long __stdcall GetModuleFileNameW_rep(struct HINSTANCE__ *,wchar_t *,unsigned long)

With this we know that GenerateFNISforUsers.exe is trying to execute hkxcmd.exe to convert the 0_master.xml file into 0_master.hkx file, but the process failed to start -- presumably because Mod Organizer can't inject the hook for GetModuleFileNameW. Unfortunately, the hresult it traps (e0434352 or E0-CCR) is basically just the base exception .NET uses to trap Win32 and COM exceptions. In any case, it seems really odd that Mod Organizer stopped injecting at this point and it doesn't seem to make any sense unless perhaps antivirus software yanked the rug out from under Mod Organizer.

I'm wondering this might have something to do with permissions on the C:\Program Files (x86) folder. We generally recommend installing Skyrim, Mod Organizer, etc. in folders other than C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files (x86) since these are typically locked down.

As Grant says, double check your anti-virus software to make sure it isn't getting in the way. You might even just temporarily disable any antivirus software so it can't interfere. I really don't want to recommend this, but run Mod Organizer as an administrator and see if this lets you run GenerateFNISforUsers.exe.

Grant: I have the archive file off copy.com if you want a copy.

EDIT: The file is still on copy.com. Use this link in case the URL shortener can't rotate those characters right-side up from down under.

Thanks @Greg, I have the archive now and it looks you're on the money with that assessment. MO is being hindered by something.

The next 2 entries in a normal log should show MO checking file attributes and continuing, this is failing in this instance so permissions is high on the list of culprits.

I have the exact same issue as johnsmith. I am stuck using vista because of hardware contraints.

Is there a definitive fix for this? I tried using the classic DEP fix for the GenerateFNISforUsers.exe but it doesnt let me add the .exe.

It is set to sun as administrator. I dont have any antivirus installed also. Any ideas?

When you say you used the classic DEP fix, I assume you mean you tried to disable data execution prevention for GenerateFNISForUsers.exe? It's been many years since I used Vista, but I seem to recall it either has DEP disabled by default or enabled only for core Windows executables by default. Also note that GenerateFNISForUsers.exe is a .NET Framework application and these do not execute code from data areas so the DEP check shouldn't be applicable here.

Also note that if you are running GenerateFNISForUsers.exe as an administrator, you must also run Mod Organizer as an administrator. I think even Vista prohibits standard user processes from hooking admin processes. Having said this, you really shouldn't need to run Mod Organizer or GenerateFNISForUsers as an administrator. This is why we recommend installing Mod Organizer, the game, and all tools outside UAC controlled folders like C:\Program Files.

Okay I will go ahead and reinstall MO, the game, and all tools to a folder on my desktop and then try to run it with all things enabled. I will post the results.

To save my mods I was just going to move MO to the desktop first, then reinstall skyrim to my desktop, then install MO, then move MO to the skyrim folder, then cut/copy the mods and downloads from the old MO folder to their appropriate folders in the fresh MO folder. I will setup FNIS and all the other tools as an executable and then run it to see how this works.
