Civil War Overhaul - Chance using it or no?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm starting a new playthrough and I'm considering using Civil War Overhaul, but i'm scared. Mod does not seem supported anymore and lots of people posting about bugs and game-breakers, although it's hard to tell if the bugs are annoyances that should be expected with a mod of that complexity, or true game-breakers. I have a Requiem-based load order and about 150 mods total.

So is anyone here running CWO with a bunch of other mods? What's your experience? Should I chance it or steer clear?

I wouldn't install it. The risk of all kinds of weird problems is still too high (despite the mod coming a long way). There's no way to uninstall it (this mod especially), and when you start to have problems, you'd have to deal with Apollodown's winning personality and attitude.

Fixed that for you. :)

I'll second Octo. I was tempted early in it's career, but the sheer number of problems reported both on Nexus and here at various points, combined with Apollo's take-it-or-leave-it attitude towards helping people rapidly convinced me otherwise. Aside from which, if it were able to be brought back in a working fashion, I'm pretty sure CRF would do it, do it better, and make it work if it were at all possible.

I've had it running in the past and played for about ten hours until I encountered the first problem at all. Which could be easily fixed with a console command. From that point on another few hours without CWO related bugs. Then I killed my installation, as usual, by adding too many mods without testing and couldn't track down CTDs anymore, so I reinstalled. ;)

I'm gonna give it a try after my current 2.2.9.2 installation and report back. Might take some time tho, this time I'm gonna do a several hours test session after each few mods I install on top of STEP to get a rock stable setup in the end.

The goal is to run the game without the need for any console commands at all - if it needs a console command to fix, it's a game-breaker in my world. I'm not going to pretend it isn't better than it used to be, but afaik the mod still does not work as intended after a couple years of work. If that's changed, then I may give it a shot and see what happens. But honestly, the civil war was one of the least important things to me... I'm the Dragonborn... civil disputes are beneath me! :)

I get your point. But I and many other people prefer starting with Alternate Start and have a completely different main story instead of immerdiately being the Dragonborn. And if you're choosing the military start, nothing is cooler than having CWO installed.

I am very aware of it still being buggy - although my experiences didn't match the horrible talking about it being unplayable. I know that there's a medium probability of having to use the console to fix something stuck. I also know there's a tiny probatility for screwing my savegame. The former doesn't bother me because the mod, especially with a military start, gives so much more than it demands. I wouldn't put it in the modlist of a friend, but I see the advantages for myself and I'm also not entirely helpless with things like using the console. The latter is approaching zero as I'm gonna use Autosave Manager with alot of incremental 10 minutes saves and the same with all scriptheavy mods anyway.

I mean, we're not talking about putting CWO in STEP or even STEP Core. I'm just saying that the mod provides tons of fun and immersion when you're okay with losing some immersion for a handful of times during your playthrough and if you're not a total noob with the console and such. :)

So it's a toss-up. I think I'll leave it out this playthrough and use Immersive Patrols instead. This character is not particularly focused on the civil war quest anyway so I think i'll save CWO for a soldier start, as elwaps was saying that's probably when it will be most important anyway. Thanks for the input!

As soon as I've finished my modbuild (so much more to do there) I'm gonna start the military start using CWO and I'll record everything to catch some impressions from the epic battles aswell as from the bug side. I think something like that is needed as CWO gets way too much hate.
