What the title says, there is a few numbers of tools/utilities guides on STEP and I believe it make more sense to have them all gathered in a single sub-category.

Relevant guides to be included into such category :

https://wiki.step-pr...om/Guide:DDSopt

https://wiki.step-pr...t.com/Guide:BAE

https://wiki.step-pr...nd_Optimization

https://wiki.step-pr...com/Guide:XEdit

https://wiki.step-pr...Guide:Wrye_Bash

https://wiki.step-pr...Skyrim_Launcher (maybe)

https://wiki.step-pr...e:Mod_Organizer

https://wiki.step-pr...VIDIA_Inspector (maybe, not "just" a modding tool.)

Potential future guide to be added to the list :

NMM (mmh, "potential")

Mator's Merge Plugins

Mator Smash

SpINI

I'm opening the discussion here instead of jumping in as it'd imply moving several guides I haven't anything to do with, and I'm not even sure how to properly create a new sub-category :3

Also, I'd like to take this opportunity to say that the "guides" pages kinda suck imho (this one https://wiki.step-pr...Category:Guides), in the way that it isn't really convenient for users to look for guides they'd be interested into.

This might be a good idea and I agree that the way those guides are presented suck. There could, at the very least, be a short description for each guide listed. I'll let s4n and Z chime in.

It's a Category page. I don't think you can put descriptions on a Category page. But the category showing sub-categories can be useful.

Best solution is to create a user "portal" page that has all the Guides listed in a nicer format with descriptions included until future projects begin to take fruit.

What would happen if "we" just add text in the category page (where "List of Guides" is currently written) ? Wouldn't it behave just like a normal page, but with the full list at the bottom ? If so it's possible to design a nice hand-made index, but keep the exhaustive automated index at the bottom.

Come to think of it, the Pack list could use a similar change.

Categories pages don't work like what you want as far as layout/descriptions go. These pages simply list all pages marked as [Category:Guides] ... the Main Page lists our most relevant guides with descriptions, so we already have this (may need to update the MP though to show/hide guides/descriptions as appropriate).

I think the Category:Guides page is very easy to scan and is a convenient reference to all guides properly categorized. I don't see any issue at all other than maybe creating a subcat to house all 'outdated'/'defunct' guides that are no longer maintained. :whistling:

The only reason to create a subcat is to break up a large list into logical sublists ... we don't have THAT many guides at present to justify breaking up (other than cordoning off defunct guides). The guide subcats we currently have are used to logically associate some clearly distinct guide types and guide sections.

I guess that's the point we disagree on ::P:  (and the one that led me to post this thread ^^)

Sorting guides in alphabetical order just doesn't make any sense for me.

You do realize that category pages are created dynamically? Even if we wanted to, we can't.

Yes, thus what I wrote in the post I self-quoted. Currently the guide page have a "customization" with the text "List of guides." What I thought was replacing this simple text by a hand-crafter index. It'd keep the dynamically referenced guide in the category and its categories, but would allow a nicer display at "first sight". The issue being that it'd have to be maintained manually.

It could be done, but I don't see this as any priority, since we have the main list all prettied up on the main page. I'll keep it in mind though and possibly implement a solution in the future (after we consolidate all guides and get the most relevant updated).
