Issue with TES5Edit and M.O.

Greetings everyone,

First of all, thanks to all of you that dedicated yourselves to improve Skyrim in unimaginable ways.

Well, I'm having a weird issue when trying to clean my mods by using TES5Edit together with Mod Organizer. I've been playing Skyrim for almost 4 years and always experimenting different mods (and of course, having major CTD's, corrupted savegames and all the other problems that could occur when you're new to modding). But I've decided to restart from the scratch a new game, with updated mods and following S.T.E.P. to make sure that my game would be at least easier to diagnose and fix.

By now I haven't even started a new game, I'm just installing mods and following guides, but I'm being unable to clean the update.esm, hearthfire.esm, dawnguard.esm and dragonborn.esm when running TES5Edit. Everytime I follow the process of applying filter, cleaning ITM's and undeleting references (and TES5Edit says that they're clean), then I run LOOT and I always receive the same message that I still have the same dirty plugins.

I tried to use TES5Edit apart from Mod Organizer and the .esm's were already clean, then I ran LOOT and received the damn message about these plugins being dirty. So I'm out of ideas on how to fix this, can you people lend me some help?

Yep, definitely your AV software being 'helpful'!

 

Any software that adds another layer of manipulation to other software will cause issues, which is why AV and firewall software are mentioned on the MO FAQ as being things to watch for.

 

Now if you wish to continue with this AV package (IMO it isn't worth it, plenty of other options some of which are free and do just the same job, or better.) there is this page that describes how to disable the firewall and sandboxing 'features' of the software.

 

As I don't run this particular AV package I can't vouch for the steps described.

 

PS. Don't bother reading past the two first posts in that forum, it quickly degenerates into a name calling fest because the OP wants to disable the firewall/sandbox.

You are running LOOT through MO, correct?

And you are using the latest versions of TES5Edit and Loot?

Yes and yes. Sorry if I wasn't clear. I'm using the latest version of both and running them through MO.

Have you moved the cleaned versions from the Overwrite folder into new mods and have them checked in the left pane? They should be placed directly after their "unmanaged" counterparts.

 

Can you post a screenshot of your MO window?

I assume what you are really saying is you can't find the cleaned *.ESMs afterwards?

Can you do system wide search for any files matching them? You should find the original files and possible the clean ones in the 'Overwrite' and backups of them with names like: 

Update.esm.backup.2016_02_15_17_43_48

If not then you haven't actually cleaned them and we can address that or if these "cleaned" versions do exist we can address their correct placement in MO.

Hi, thank you all for the replies. Just for clarification, I'm following this guide:

And this is the first time I'm experiencing this kind of issue because it's also the first time I've decided to use MO for all my mods. Yesterday I've decided to delete all my Data folder of Skyrim and downloaded it again, now I've tried to clean the ITM's from a fresh Steam download, and still got the same weird bug: TES5Edit says that they're clean already but my Overwrite folder is empty.

I've searched my entire system for any file that could look like "update.esm.backup" and found nothing too.

Here are some prints of my MO window and after trying to clean the update.esm.

 

 

 

 

Edit: I tried to do same with EnhancedLightsandFX.esp and clean those 12 ITM records, the Overwrite folder was empty, but I found its backup version in a hidden Windows 10 folder in "C:\VTRoot\HarddiskVolume3\steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\TES5Edit Backups" what does this means?

Inside the root Skyrim folder of this VTRoot I also found a version of all the DLC's .esm's.

Do you happen to have Skryim (and steam) installed to the C:\Programs Files... folder?

My Steam is installed in C:\ but I always put my games to be installed on D:\. I'm using Comodo Internet Security also, and it seems that this VTRoot is part of the Autosandboxing of the program, maybe it's hiding my cleaned and backup files in this folder.

@GrantSP yes, it was that the problem! :D

Well, I'm gonna leave this explanation here in case someone else find a similar situation: If you let Autosandboxing active while using Comodo Internet Security (can't vouch for other AV that may use the same feature) you might find yourself in the same situation as I, TES5Edit did clean the mods, but my AV put them in a hidden folder in the C:\ partition called "VTRoot". All that I had to do was to deactivate this feature in the AV, reach for the folder and cut-paste the cleaned files in their original folders were you put your MO mods. Now everything is clean and going easy ^^
