X550JX VS X550VX (Laptop)

Well, at those price ranges, I haven't find FHD laptops yet.

Anyway, I have just found a nice DELL Inspiron 14 559 (I think), same specs as JX but is a Dell (obvious), has GTX 950M 4GB and I got Win 10 + Office 365 for free. But, it's priced 50 bucks higher.

Damn, I still can't decide yet

If you can afford around a grand, probably HP Omen range. I was thinking of getting a laptop recently, but I have always destroyed the charging ports by leaving the charger in on my lap. Mind you, that's another thing... they aren't really meant to be used on your lap. You are probably better off with a compact living room PC and a wireless keyboard and mouse/gamepad.

  • Security Software:
    • McAfee AntiVirus Plus (Factory Pre-Install [Digital Version]) [+0]

:bat:

When it's delivered I wouldn't even boot it up. Just wipe the drives and reinstall windows.

I just use Avira Free + Malwarebytes Free + Waterfox with NoScript and never a problem is had. To be honest I always forget to run Malwarebytes lately as it usually never finds anything when I do.

What is your price range? Since it's Cyber Monday there should be some great deals out there on laptops.

About 600-750 bucks. No, there's no Cyber Monday sale in my country. I never ship an item to my country (Indonesia) as it's usually become 100 dollars higher due to 9999999999999 tax.

  • Go for a 1080p screen if you can find one.

Avoid DDR3 if battery life matters,

look for a minimum of 8GB of RAM.

Avoid built in optical drives, instead get a machine with USB 3 support and use a detachable drive for those times you need an optical port.

If you can find and afford one get a machine with a Thunderbolt port so you could consider an eGPU.

Don't get hung up on brands or models, let the requirements guide you.

Once the requirements have led you some where read all the professional and amateur reviews to see if it is a good choice.

Tbh, both seem like rather poor choices. Very heavy for a mobile device and I'd expect poor battery life too, especially for the Haswell HQ.

Asus is also known for high rma rates on their mobos, dunno if that applies to their mobile devices too though. But at least it's not HP :)

Anyway, I got second thoughts about this. Should I :

1. Buy a decent laptop, or

2. Buy a middle class laptop and upgrade my PC at the same time? (My PC is i3-2100k with 4GB RAM and GT 440 1GB, so yeah pretty old here...)

3. Wait for CES 2017 to decide

Any thoughts?

Do you really need a laptop? What do you need it for?

The second question is especially important regarding choices of models.

You will alwas get much better hardware for the price if you don't go mobile. Especially for gaming.

Zen will hopefully lower the high cpu prices. It may be beneficial to wait.
