Merge Plugins Error on beginning Merge

aba42

Question

I've been using Merge Plugins successfully for the last few years.  Yesterday, I started receiving an error.  Running Mod Organizer, I open Merge Plugins, select the mods to be merged (all contiguous), select the Masters, select <OK> and get this error:  "Access violation at address 00091A730 in module 'MergePlugins.exe', Read of address 00000000."

I have double-checked.  Skyrim and Merge Plugins folders (and files) are not set to "read only".  I am running as Administrator.  There are no log files in Merge Plugins.  There are log files for Mod Organizer.  The last four entries show:

"D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\Mod Organizer\mods\Rosentia Mateus - Standalone UNP, Added HDT\RosentiaFollower.esp: 20
DEBUG (08:56:30.0214): createfile w: D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\Data\RosentiaFollower.esp -> D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\Mod Organizer\mods\Rosentia Mateus - Standalone UNP, Added HDT\RosentiaFollower.esp (80000000 - 3) = 00001130 (0)
INFO (08:56:30.0230): Windows Exception (c0000005). Origin: "D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\Merge Mods\MergePlugins.exe" (69f365). Last hooked call: void *__stdcall CreateFileW_rep(const wchar_t *,unsigned long,unsigned long,struct _SECURITY_ATTRIBUTES *,unsigned long,unsigned long,void *)
INFO (08:56:30.0245): Windows Exception (c0000005). Origin: "D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\Merge Mods\MergePlugins.exe" (91a730). Last hooked call: unsigned long __stdcall GetModuleFileNameW_rep(struct HINSTANCE__ *,wchar_t *,unsigned long)"

Can anyone help me understand this?  I am neither a programmer, nor a modder, just a fairly advanced PC user.  This is on Win10, screamin' machine, plenty o' disk space and memory, if that has any bearing?

Thank you!

Allen

P.S.  Rosentia is currently the last mod in the list.  I did have Ambre as the last, but thought the mod might be the problem so excluded it this time.  However, I got the same error without Ambre in the list to be merged.

I started Merge Plugins outside of Mod Organizer, and got this error:  "Access violation at address 0009aA730 in module 'MergePlugins.exe'. Read of address 00000000."

When I start Merge Plugins outside Skyrim, even though I select my profile (set within MO), I only get listed Skyrim, Update, Dawnguard, Hearthfires, Dragonborn, the three HighTexturePacksw and Bashed Patch.  None of the other mods I've added are included.  When I click <OK> to go into Merge Plugins, that's when I get the error.

Oh, so "no", I cannot "Verify File Access" as I cannot get into Merge Plugins.  I've reinstalled 2.3.1 twice now.  Same result when i try to merge.

Also, MergePlugins.exe is excluded across-the-board for Norton Utilities and, as I said, it's been working fine for several years, in all iterations!

P.S.  Once more thing.  The Masters are not coming up correctly in the opening screen either.  In MO, I selected, say, 13 mods.  The Masters used to be (I've made this merge before) Skyrim, Update, Dragonborn, Dawnguard, ApacheHairFemale, and RaceCompatibility.  Now, as soon as I select all 13 mods, the only masters are Skyrim and Update!

try deleting/renaming your merge plugins "profiles" folder.

also when you say you get the error, is that happening after you've selected a profile or before?  check to make sure you don't have an invalid profile argument set for merge plugins in Mod Organizer.

In MO, I select <Run> for Merge Plugins.  That opens the Profiles window.  I select my Skyrim Profile and click <OK>.  That opens the <Plugin Selection> window.  I right-click, and <uncheck all>, then select the 13 mods, then select the Masters.  But, as I said, the Masters are not being selected as they were.  I only get Skyrim and Update for this merge, not all six Masters I had earlier.  Then, when I select <OK> is when I get the error.  Same procedure inside MO and outside MO (except I just double-click on MergePlugins.exe outside of MO).

Yeah, delete the profiles folder and start that fresh.  If you still have issues then it is without a doubt some kind of file access issue, most likely related to your Antivirus/OS.  Are you on Windows 10?

Also, have you tried starting Merge Plugins selecting only Skyrim.esm and Update.esm?

After I generate the first error, if I select <OK> on it, I get a second error:  "Access violation at address 0091b78F in module 'MergePlugins.exe'.  Read of address 00000000."  BUT, Merge Plugins opens (grayed out) behind it.  In the window are the following lines:

These first 7 lines are in green; the last four lines are in red:

[00:00:00] (GENERAL) Status: ProgramVersion: 2.3.1.0

[00:00:00] (GENERAL) Status: TES5 Ductuibart GasgL $8914D9A3

[00:02:45] (ERROR): Load: Review your log messages to resolve the issue

[00:02:45] (ERROR): Load: You can also change the program's settings, if necessary.

As I said, there are no log messages in Merge Plugins.  The log message from the most recent Mod Organizer log is listed above.  Hope that helps?

I deleted the profiles window, created a new folder and named it profiles and added my profiles back in (otherwise, how would I  populate them?  Or, does MO do that automatically?  I don't know how these things work.

I started MergePlugins.exe outside MO, only selected Skyrim and Update and got the same error.

Okay, I'll assume it's a permissions error and try to pursue that farther.  Thank you!!

You can create profiles from the profile selection window, and Merge Plugins will automatically create them fresh if there are no profiles.  The point of me having you delete that folder was to start with fresh profiles - putting the profiles BACK into that folder changes nothing.  Please completely delete the folder and start merge plugins.  The application should create the folder and some default profiles fresh.  My theory is that it's either a file access issue OR you have corrupted profiles somehow.

Well, rightly or wrongly, I deleted my profiles folder and now Mod Organizer will not start, giving me this error:  "failed to create D:/Skyrim/steamapps/common/Skyrim/Mod Organizer/profiles/ABA42/modlist.txt".

Even so, I opened Windows Explorer and attemted to start Mod Organizer with only Skyrim and Update checked.  I got the same error in the same place.

Suggestions?

P.S.  I also COMPLETELY uninstalled both Norton Utilities and MalwareBytes.  Didn't change a thing.

P.P.S.  And I've double-checked that I have removed "read only" access from all Skyrim files and from my C:\Users\profile, and double-checked that I have Full Permissions to do anything on this PC.  It's Win10Pro.

I just received a message from AshestoAsherz (a modder on Skyrim) who says that my issues MAY be related to the latest Win10Pro Update!!  Figures, those Mothers can NEVER leave well-enough alone.  Let me go uninstall that puppy and try all this stuff again!  Gheesh!

I instructed you to delete the Merge Plugins profiles folder, not the Mod Organizer profiles folder...

try deleting/renaming your merge plugins "profiles" folder.

Awell. I hope reversing that update will fix things for you.

Well, in perhaps this ONE instance, I wasn't as dumb as I look.  I made a backup of the MO Profiles before I deleted it.  So, it's back now.  I then deleted the MergePlugins profiles folder.  I then started MergePlugins, and selected only Skyrim and Update and it worked fine!!  So it MUST have gotten corrupted somehow...

So is there anything else i need to do with Merge Plugins before I again attempt to access it from withing Mod Organizer?

Also, I checked in MO, and when I tried to "Run" Merge Plugins, it no longer sees my aba42 profile, which is where I have all my installed mods.  So how do I now get MergePlugins to recognize my ABA42 profile inside MO?

Thank you!!

Allen

P.S.  I ran "Verify File Access" and the message says "Merge Plugins as the required system file access permissions."

What I was asking up above is, I open Merge Plugins in MO.  Then I create a new profile.  For the path, do I link only to Skyrim, or to Skyrim/Mod Organizer/, or to Skyrim/Mod Organizer/mods?  I just need to be able to see all of the mods that I've added to Skyrim so I may merge the last 13 of 'em.  Thank you!  Allen

UGH!  Never mind...I closed everything, restarted everything, and my mod list repopulated just like it was supposed to.  THANK YOU for your patience...I have NO idea how that folder got corrupted.  I set MergePlugins in again, and through MO just successfully created that 13-file merge.  I'm outta here, but thank you for developing Merge Plugins in the first place, it's saved my bacon a lot of times, and allows me to play Skyrim the way I wish to play it!!
