Where are mods installed. Nexus and STEP differ. Insane.

This is insane, two radically different instructions from two groups who should know.

 

MO2 appears to want to DL everything to my C:, but that is a small SSD devoted to the operating system and I have Skyrim installed on E:, also a SSD, which is too small for the many downloads and mods a fully modded Skyrim would require.  Moving the downloads to a larger drive was easy and done.  But Nexus and STEP, and I think Gamerpoets, are telling me totally different things.  Where does the Mod folder need to be?

 

 

Nexus:

• create a folder where modding resources will be installed (outside of skyrim's directory but on same drive). An example: "C:\Skyrim Mod"

 

STEP - 29 Sep 2018

Installation and configuration

Skyrim mods must all be installed to the Skyrim data directory. If you have followed recommendations it will be somewhere like this D:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\common\skyrim\Data.

MO2 does not "appear to want to DL everything to C:". It lets you configure where you want your download folder, the default may well be C:.

 

Nexus suggests a folder outside of Skyrim's directory, but on same drive - that is fine.

 

For the STEP instructions your reading comprehension has failed - you fail to quote the line above the text you quote, which states the instructions apply when not using Mod Organizer.

Nexus and Gamerpoets both recommend installing the mod folder on the same drive but not within the Skyrim folder without reference to MO.  STEP was the only one mandating it be installed within the Skyrim folder, but only in the case of no installation of MO, as you pointed out.

Note that where Mod Organizer stores downloaded files depends on how you configure Mod Organizer. If you install Med Organizer and select Instance mode, the files may be downloaded to C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\ModOrganizer. You can open Settings to select pretty much any path you want to use for Downloads (but keep it away from UAC controlled folders, Steam folder, and the game folders).

 

If you install Mod Organizer in portable mode, downloaded files are stored in the ModOrganizer\Downloads folder. If you installed Mod Organizer in say D:\Tools\ModOrganizer, the downloads folder should be D:\Tools\ModOrganizer\Downloads. You can also open Settings to select pretty much any path you want to use for Downloads.

 

Also note that you may find some older guides or videos floating around that direct you to install Mod Organizer in the Steam or game folder. This is obsolete information and should be ignored because Mod Organizer's virtual file system does not work correctly if Mod Organizer is installed in the game folder and may not work correctly if it's installed in the Steam folder.
