I started from scratch. Clean vanilla, Now I get an error when I quit. After I quit, I get Skyrim has stopped responding and I have to "alt tab" to clear it. Any thoughts on what's causing this?

Edit: I rebooted and the issue went away

The issue has been resolved. I believe it was the 4K textures. I have them all at 2K and running smooth. The max that I hit for Memory was 2.8GB with an average of 2.3. Using an ENB as well. 50-60fps

thats great:thumbsup: im using uGrids=5 in a new play thru shadows 2k water 2k (with all settings on:) "under test" and Ill probably lower them to 1k) and havent had a crash yet :woot: you should maybe leave some resources to unexpected events like a Dragon spawn or multiple hostile NPC spawn, this way your sure you will not crash suddenly or not so frequently.

only if this game were coded and optimized better.... I thought they promised a DX11 version of the game, what ever happened to that?

This thread helps a lot. I think I'm gonna go through my textures and optimize them all to no higher than 2X. Jnipz is right in mentioning that 4K textures shouldn't even be listed if the game is inherently programmed to have such a low memory limit...or at least put some sort of warning stating such (since some gamers may want a custom mix of High/Low res textures).

Skyrim's not inherently programmed to have a low memory limit, as such.  The fundamental limit is 4gb, due to its 32bit executable.  It seems clear now that textures in VRAM are largely mirrored in RAM - possibly by design, or likely due to the behavior of DX9.  There is emerging evidence that Skyrim will crash when RAM usage for the Skyrim process exceeds 3GB.  However: - there does not appear to be an exact limit in the 3 - 4 gb range, experiences vary. - we don't know why this is happening, it may or may not be due to poor coding, or some other limitation we have not identified. - we cannot be sure yet that it is definitely memory causing the crashes.  There appears to be a correlation, but it could be some other factor that increases roughly in tandem with memory usage. - many users can use high res textures without problems. So, while this is something we need to investigate as we progress, it's a bit premature to start warning people off high quality textures.

I believe that with the massive amount of mods that STEP uses, It can be difficult to use 4K+ textures on all that offer.  I had max resolution textures for every mod, which increased memory usage.  I also introduced another variable (uGrids 7), which caused issues.  I found that any uGrid setting higher than 5 conflicted with Distant Detail (Maybe there needs to be a note next to this item as a caution).  I haven't tested any texture resolution higher than 2K with my "very clean" install.  They might work now that my uGrids are default 5.  I might introduce one at a time and see how that goes, but for now I'm happy with 2K.

That sounds right to me.  I can run all of STEP with the maximum textures, and it's completely stable.  But if I start raising ugrids, then memory use shoots up and I soon encounter crashes.  As you say, this is also another variable - high ugrids demand far more memory, which may invite crashes, but they may also cause crashes for other reasons unknown. I would think that 2K STEP at default ugrids should look great and be pretty stable.
