Immersive Animations left hand draw/sheath not working

MasterBomarc

Question

I followed the Skyrim Revisited guide, and so far everything seems to be working except for drawing weapons for my left hand, or from a shield on my back. The animation for the right hand plays, and the left hand sword/shield just jumps into my hand without an animation. This is happening both with dual wielding and only wielding a weapon in my left hand. I did make an exception when installing the XP32 and Immersive Animations, as I do not like the swords and dagger on the back.

I decided to create a new profile, and try and get the animations working without the mess of the rest of my mod list. I fiddled with that for a couple hours, and still could not get it fixed. Mod organiser crashed on me, and I lost all my profiles/exicutables/ini settings and it would not recognise python or NCC. A reinstall of MO was in order. After that I kept better track of what I tried to get the animations to work.

On every reinstall, I created a new character (default Nord). Selected joining the Companions and bought a second steel sword and a hide shield to test out the animations. All animations were testing both while the character was stationary and while the character was moving.

So on a fresh mod list, I edited the skyrim.ini according to Skyrim Revisited.

I installed

  • SkyUI, Realistic Force and FNIS
  • XPMS, keeping the defaults for everything
  • Dual Sheath Redux
  • Immersive animations, selecting Main module, sneaking, strafe, greatsword sprint, dual sword wield -- swords on hip, dual axe wield, dual mace wield, rogue stab.
  • Alternate Start - Live Another Life
I ran BOSS, then FNIS. Checking Skeleton Arm Fix. Finally I ran SUM, keeping everything at the default settings.

The right hand animation was correct, the left hand had no animations. The Shield jumped from the back to my hand, and the sword jumped from his hip to his hand. I did have both weapons correctly sheathed on my hips, and the right hand animations was correct. The rogue stab animation was working correctly.

I Reinstalled XPMS and Immersive Animations, following the skyrim revisited guide for what to install. then reran FNIS with the Skeleton Arm fix, and SUM.

This time the swords were sheathed on my back, and the right hand animation was correct. Again, the left hand animation did not work. So my animations seem to be matching my skeleton, but I cannot seem to get my character to grab his shield or sword from his left hand.

I share your pain bro, this whole past week has been full of re-installs of Dual Sheathe Redux/XP32 Skeleton/Immersive Animations, and I STILL don't have a full grasp of what to select to get the experience I wanted.

But, what I have learned are these helpful tips:

1. *My* install order for these to work:

Dual Sheathe Redux

Realistic Ragdolls and Force

XP32 Max Skeleton [replace ragdoll's skeleton with this]

Immersive Animations

2. It's not communicated very well on either of the mod pages, but for those who may have been confused like me:

-Dual Sheathe Redux has NOTHING to do with sheathing animations, it only governs weapon placement on the character. Therefore, after you install once properly no need to re-install in order to change animations.

-With Immersive Animations YOU CAN ONLY CHOOSE ONE STYLE SO YOU NEED TO DECIDE WHAT WEAPON STYLE YOU WILL GO WITH AND PICK ANIMATIONS TO BEST MATCH!! ALSO, NO MATTER WHAT THERE WILL BE VISUAL INCONSISTENCY SOMEWHERE! This can't be overstated!

I.E. if you choose the animation for removing swordnshield/dual swords from your back, then just know that EVERY ANIMATION FOR USING 1HSWORD WILL BE THIS ANIMATION (SHIELD OR NO SHIELD) FOR YOUR CHARACTER AS WELL AS NPCS (unless using mods to have custom player animations, of course).

3. I've found the best solution is to dig in and install the files manually for Immersive Animations, just make sure you choose the right options based off what you selected in the XP32 Max Skel install. Also, I've started just making multiple install packs of each so I can activate whichever animations I want. The main problem with the Immersive Animations NMM installer is that it allows you to choose multiple animations that overlap and write over eachother, so best to install using the pack 1st and then follow up with manual selection of the sheathe animations you want.

With all that said, it sounds like you just have the wrong 1hm_equip/unequip files being installed. Try manually dragging those files from the dualswordback folder of the install pack, then run FNIS again (of course).

Also, verify that those files aren't being overridden by files from another animation mod.

I use MO so also have to check that old FNIS behavior files/animations aren't remaining in the Overwrite folder. If they do, any changes you make will be void because they'll load with the wrong behaviors.

If you do all of that, you should definitely get it to work how you'd like.

Took me a billion tries to figure out that you can only choose one option for Immersive Animations. Drove me f**kin' nuts.

Anyways, I'm about done putting together a picture guide for ENB and will probably do another one. Would it help to have a guide with pcitures and stuff for FNIS/Immersive Animations/SkyProc/Mod Organizer? All those extras people have to run for certain mods can be confusing. I'm a freakin' STEP mod and that stuff confused me at first.

Well on day 2. I did a complete manual install for all of them. Only selecting 1 animation (the dual sword on hip.) and still nothing. The left arm just does not move at all. It wont do any animations. I guessed the same thing about trying to only install the 1 animation, but I figured if I followed the Skyrim Redesigned guide it would have worked. But it still didn't. After the manual install didn't work (Again only choosing the one 1hm_equip/unequip), I made a separate profile in MO. Only installed the FNIS/SUM/DSR/XP32/RR&F and IA. Followed the Skyrim Redesigned procedure exactly, nothing was being overwritten, and still it did not work. I'm at a lose now. I ended up skipping it for now, as I do not play in 3rd person. So the animations are not that important for me. I may come back to it once I get a video card that can actually hand playing Skyrim with my mod list.

XPMS and Immersive animations suck in their respective setup, since XPMS fomod installer is bugged and doesn't give you the right skeletons for your respective selections (at least that was true last time I installed it) and Immersive animations seems to give you all the necessary animations for all playstyles, but in fact it doesn't.

1. Making a new character is not necessary every time. Rush through Helgen once and then through the mine on the way to riverwood, then take every one-handed and two-handed weapon once (there are 2 maces, 2 swords, 2 daggers, 2 axes, 1 torch, 1 greatsword, 1 battleaxe, 1 warhammer and 1 shield). Save.

2.For XPMS you'll need to Download the archive manually to your desktop.

Extract the files to a working directory.

Move the files of XPMS you want to a mod directory (with the subfolder data) and activate it, to see whether it works, so whether the weapon placement is alright.

3. Try out the installation method of this video for immersive animations:

First stick to his exact choices, then see if it works. If it did, pick your own choices and verify that it works.

4. If all went well, install DSR to see your 2nd hand weapon appearing.

The latest XPMS install works I believe, the only part that's confusing is the when it asks if you use Joy of Perspective mod (which no matter what, you choose No). Other than that it's worked fine for me.

Personally, I've watched that youtube video at least a dozen times and honestly it doesn't help a lick. Shouldn't use NMM with STEP anyway so if following STEP I suggest avoiding it, just confuses things more.

To the OP: I dunno that sounds weird for the arm to still not work after a fresh install, especially if you're not getting warnings using FNIS.

Maybe double check that you have the latest version of all mods...

I installed alternate start so I don't have to deal with Helgan at all. I can start in the Companions and buy the weapons I need there. Both DSR and XPMS are working. Its only the animations that are not. And I find that odd after doing a manual install only installing the 1hm_equip/unequip files for sword/shield. And again, the left arm did nothing. I might just pass on IA, seeing as I only play in 1st person anyone. I might try again shortly, Once I get a GPU powerful enough to play Skyrim

I have the issue as well, and never could solve it. I ended up just unchecking the mod options in the MCM because it bugged me too much to just see things pop into place. I had both working just fine when I was using Skyre, but since restarted a game using Requiem it won't work no matter what I do.

I also had an issue with the staff portion of DSR not working randomly. Sometimes the staff would appear on the backs of followers, sometimes it wouldn't. Sometimes it'd be invisible on the back, but visible when drawn. Other times it'd be both visible on the back while also being visible when drawn, making it look like they had two staves. Or it could be visible on the back, but invisible in the hand.

I eventually just gave up on it all.

I too went trough a lot of trouble to make this combination of mods work and I finally made it work on Mod Organizer. So far I tried many combinations of animations and it has been working pretty well. NOTE: I don't have nor Frostfall or Joy of Perspective mods installed, I haven't tried them, maybe in the future and I honestly don't know if the next guide will work if any of them are installed.

This is how I made this work:

1. Deactivate the FOMOD Installer Plugin of Mod Manager; to do this go to Mod Manager Settings/Plugins, select FOMOD Installer and on the right panel should be two lines, “enabled†and “preferâ€, double click on each one will show a drop down menu, change both options to “falseâ€.

2. Download the “Immersive Animations - NMM Installer - Complete Pack†mod with the “Download with manager button†so Mod Manager is used. Go to the downloads tab, search for the mod and double click it to install it, wait for the installation window to appear. There should be 16 checkboxes on the left panel and on the right panel a brief description of each option. I checked the next ones as they are general animations and fixes.

  • Main Module
  • Sneaking
  • Strafe
  • Normal Sprint
  • Rogue Stab
  • Female Walk Fix
  • Leaping Cross Slash

Now, the remaining options will change the animations for double wielding. If in the description says that it replaces ('insert weapon here') draw/sheathe animation YOU CAN ONLY CHECK ONE. Example: you can't check both “Sword and Shield Wield†and “Dual Sword Wield - Swords on Back†because then the animation files will be replaced by the last one you check. You can check the axe and mace dual wield options as they don't interfere with any other option.

You can check only one of the following for sword and shield

  • Sword and Shield Wield
  • Dual Sword Wield - Swords on Back
  • Dual Sword Wield - Swords on Hip

If you choose one of the previous three options you can go on and check

  • Dual Dagger Wield

But there are two more options for sword and dagger. If you choose one of the following you can't check any of the previous four because they change both sword and dagger draw/sheathe animation

  • Dual Wield Combo Sword/Dagger Dagger/Sword
  • Single Sword or Dagger on Back

Just read the description and go with whichever you'd like to try. It's important to note that if you check any dual ('insert weapon here') wield option and in game you use only one of said weapon, you'll have to stick with the dual animation (it looks funny sometimes).

Once you've made your selection click finish to install the mod. Once installed activate it by checking the box in Mod Manager's left panel.

3. Download the â€œXPMS 1-93a NMM-Bain Installer†mod with the “Download with manager button†so Mod Manager is used. Search for it in the download tab and double click it to begin installation.

  • In the first window check only “XPMS Defaultâ€. Click next.
  • In the next window check “NOâ€. Click next.
  • In the next window check nothing. Click next.
  • In the next window, the option you check will depend on which animation you chose for sword in the Immersive Animations mod. Basically if you selected ANY animation whose description says that the sword(s) will be in the hip, select “XPMS Defaultâ€; if you selected ANY animation whose description says that the sword(s) will be in the back, select “Back 1 Handed Swordâ€.
    • If you selected â€œBack 1 Handed Sword†the next window will present an option to install an animation for sword in the back of the character, don't check it. The Immersive Animations mod already installed the corresponding sword animation. Click next.
  • In the next window, the option you check will depend on which animation you chose for dagger in the Immersive Animations mod. Basically if you selected ANY animation whose description says that the dagger(s) will be in the hip, select “XPMS Defaultâ€; if you selected ANY animation whose description says that the dagger(s) will be in the back, select “Back Hip Daggerâ€. Click next.
    • If you selected â€œBack Hip Dagger†the next window will present an option to install an animation for dagger in the back of the character, don't check it. The Immersive Animations mod already installed the corresponding animation. Click next.
  • In the next window select only “Skeleton Rig mapâ€. Click next.
  • In the next window select whichever option appears (only one should appear). Click finish to install the mod.
  • Activate the mod and place it exactly after the Immersive Animations mod.

4. Follow ALL the instructions on the S.T.E.P. guide to install the Dual Sheath Redux and Better Shaped Weapons (optional) mods. Make the DSR Output mod and activate it.

5. Follow ALL the instructions on the S.T.E.P. guide to install the Fore's New Idles in Skyrim (FNIS). Make the FNIS Output mod and activate it.

6. The mod order on the left panel of the Mod Organizer should be

  • Immersive Animations (installed from Immersive Animations - NMM Installer - Complete Pack)
  • XP32 - Maximum Skeleton (installed from XPMS 1-93a NMM-Bain Installer)
  • Dual Sheath Redux
  • DSR Output
  • Better Shaped Weapons  (optional)
  • Fore's New Idles in Skyrim - FNIS
  • FNIS Output

The “XP32 - Maximum Skeleton†mod will show the swords or daggers sheaths on the hip or on the back of the character if you select those options regardless of the options you selected in the “Immersive Animations†mod. Basically if you select animations for dagger or sword on the hip of the character make the appropriate selection when prompted by the “XP32 - Maximum Skeleton†mod, the same with animations on the back of the character. The selections on both mods needs to match otherwise you'll get a hip unsheathe animation with sword sheaths on the back of the character or something crazy.

You can try many combinations of animations, I always completely remove the “Immersive Animations†and “XP32 - Maximum Skeleton†mods (you don't need to go through the whole process again), install them again with the combination I want to try out and place the mods in the order shown on step 6 again. Also make sure to update the FNIS behavior every time you try a new combination.

And... that's it. It worked for me.

Holy ****, made an account just to say thank you jaMineroR!
Very in-depth guide, and the only thing that finally got this working for me. The multiple selection thing is a huge headache.

ps: if you run loot at the very end, you'll have to do the DSR patch again and NOT run loot

@ jaMineroR Oh my god dude you are bad ass! I was struggling with these 4 freaking mods to play nice with each other so I could get my sword on back animation but everytime I came close to itm it managed to mess up on one account or the other. Sometimes the animation would be odd or sometimes the sheath would be on the hip. I was about nearing my limit when I stumbled upon this thread and your detailed explaination. And viola! Everything running in perfect order! Made an account specially to thank you. And thanks @ Matches77 as well for that tip of running DSR after running LOOT.
