Help with Skyrim ini file

OISteven

Question

I recently reinstalled Skyrim and the core mods from the S.T.E.P guide. Started a new game and when i reached Riverwood I saved game and returned to desktop so I could edit the ini files. So I edited the ini files the way I wanted them, saved both ini files and then loaded my save game to find that everything was ok and the way I wanted it, but I forgot to add uExterior Cell Buffer=64, uGridsToLoad=7 to the file. So I then went back and put those 2 lines in my ini file. Then when I loaded up my save game, the game would not work.

I then restored my working ini file and loaded the game back up. When in game I pushed Alt + Tab, then went into my ini file and added uExterior Cell Buffer=64, uGridsToLoad=7 to the file, I then saved the ini file and went back to the game, when in game I brung up the command console and typed refreshini, soon as I did that a CTD happened.

Anyone have any idea's as to what is wrong and why I cant use uExterior Cell Buffer=64 and uGridsToLoad=7

I have the Steam version of Skyrim and i5 2500k @ 4.0 Ghz / 8 GB Ram / GTX 560ti / Windows 7

Might Be a script issue. The Moment you load a Save with a higher ugrid-Setting the Game wants to create a much wider area of ai-Interaction. Depending in the Mods you have installed that alter ai this can create errors in the Engine which then shuts down immediately. 2 Ways to try to solve this. Either you Start a New Game with ugrids7 or you try to load Up your old Save. Whatever you do, enable Logging, tracing and debug info for Papyrus in your Skyrim.ini file. If you Experience Crashs, Look at your Logs to find the script that causes you Problems!

Ok I enabled Logging, tracing and debug info for Papyrus, I then added uExterior Cell Buffer=64, uGridsToLoad=7 back into my ini file. I loaded up my save game to watch it crash so that I could check the crash reports, but for some weird reason the game worked fine.

I will keep testing cos there must be something wrong somewhere for it to have crashed every other time.

I would not bother with ugrids 7, too much hassle. If you are looking for better distance graphics, like more rocks, trees etc. Try the Skyrim Distance Overhaul mod, you can find a post on it in the Mod Suggestions subforum. Its an excellent replacement.

This is nothing new we've known this for months you must either start a new game or use console commands to change your ugrids or your savegame with be destroyed, changing the ini and loading a savegame is a 100% chance of corruption.
