Problem with Wrye Bash and Step Extended Patch.esp = CTD during Character Creation

BlessedBlogger

Question

Please forgive me, I don't know anything about modding and I'm not great with computers. I've spent the last four days installing and meticulously making sure I've done everything exactly as instructed in the STEP 2.2.9 guide to set up STEP: Extended on a clean fresh install of Skyrim. Between MO, LOOT, FNIS, Wrye Bash and Tes5Edit it's been a steep learning curve for me and I'm overwhelmed.Wrye Batch shows the Step Extended Patch.esp file as red, which I think means it's missing some master files. I'm also getting some errors in other places. It's probably easier if I just show you.I've also attached a text doc of my mod list, which is almost entirely STEP:Extended Mods, in case that helps. If there's a better way to show my mod list please let me know.I'm at my wits end and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and assistance!

try this

I thought it wasn't very common anymore...

EDIT after post #3:

Hmm, double check your SKSE/SSME settings you may have put 512 as heap 1 (I forgot the name) it should be 768... It can be higher but if you need it you know who you are. Same goes for the heap 2(Yes, I forgot the name).

To give you some insight, use this

No, it won't harm your install. It's made by the person that discovered the heap issues or the person that fixed them... IDK

The STEP patch isn't actually red, it's orange. There's a difference. Orange usually means Masters are not correctly sorted.

MO would show if you were missing masters. There'd be an exclamation point in a triangle next to any plugin that was missing a master.

Try what hishutup suggested first.

Then if you want to get rid of any orange files in Wrye Bash, what you need to do is this: Open up TES5Edit. Load JUST the plug in that Wrye's reporting as orange. Let TES5EDit do its thing. This time though, when it's finsihed, right click on the plug in in TES5's left pane. Go down to 'Sort Masters'. Select that option. TES5's usually fairly quick in finishing, but I usually wait a second or so then close and save.

Next time you start up Wrye, that plugin should show as green.

The other thing you can try is this: Fire up TES5Edit again, and this time load EVERY plug in. TES5Edit will load them all and if any are out of order or there's a problem, will abort and tell you. Often it's as simple as one .esp file not being loaded before another .esp file, etc.

First, thank you for the help!I did everything you both said and I had a terrible time getting it set up properly but it did help. I can get past the character creation now, and my Step Extended Patch.esp is no longer orange. The red of the images I posted are the same, files showing up red and I have no idea if it matters or not. Now I crash as I enter Helgen Keep. I've read on other forums than using any mods before exiting Helgen can cause the game to crash so you should leave all mods disabled until you get to the first town and then load them. Is that true, could that be why I keep crashing at Helgen? Also, is there a limit to how many mods you can run in the game at one time? I followed the STEP guide and ended up with, I think, 275 mods just from that. This has been a very frustrating experience. I've played lots of games with mods and never had this many problems. And while the STEP guide is great for folks who MAKE mods and are familiar with coding/programming and the various programs associated with it (Tes5Edit, Boss, Loot, Wrye Bash, etc) it's not written in a way easily understandable by the laymen. If you have any further advice, I would love to hear it. Just remember to write it as if you're instructing a child with step by step instructions otherwise I'll likely struggle with it. Thank you again for your assistance!

Honestly, there may have been something messed up in wrye bash... Most skyrim mods no longer support wrye bash... Some installs use a similar folder structure though.

I don't think any of that should really matter though other than if you used out dated bcfs because I believe step no longer maintains the bcfs for 2.2.9

Do you have enb set up correctly and what's you skse.ini

umm use this next time
Text
but those seem fine...

At first I thought you were using Wrye Bash... I re-read and I see you're using MO... I'm at a loss... oh, okay... Would it be possible to list out extra mods you are using... because reading the mod list is pretty difficult. I think I know where to start though.

for testing start removing stuff:

skytest

WAIT, run FNIS, run DSR, make sure there are no errors and then immediately start your game.

There is only so many things it can be:

* Bad save. Yes, even a brand new game can have issues if you save early. I would recommend use Alternate start to skip the buggy intro quest.

* Unstable Mods. the entire list is fine, other than Skytest which sticks out like a sore thumb. Skytest is okay for some and not for others.

* bad configuration files. That being skyrim, skyrimprefs, enblocal and skse

* Some random setting in Mod Organizer

and Some others...

On a side note if you want to start a new game without the intro quest and without using Alternate start then follow this but it will not be a save that you would keep only to quickly test something:

* Start the game

* At the main menu open the console [`]

* Type "coc whiterunexterior01" without quotes. (if you know a different cell it doesn't matter)

Honestly, I believe your came from a bad new game but Skytest can produce similar results.

There's not as much a MODS limit as there is a plug ins limit. If you hit 255 or more plug ins you'll get issues. Now having said that, most texture and mesh types mods wont have plugins, just the texture and mesh files, so you should be able to toss a few of them in there as long as your card and memory don't have a headache.

Do the same thing sorting masters as I showed above for any file that's not green in Wrye as well. Will possibly save issues in the long run.

The strange thing I'm seeing in your images is that Racemenu looks like it has a grey lightning bolt next to it. That essentially means it's being overwritten completely by something. Could you try double clicking on Racemenu, clicking on the conflicts tab and seeing what files are overwriting it?

Hishutup:Ok, so I started a new game, after running the two patches but leaving SkyTest running as you said, and using the console command to skip the intro. I ran around for ten minutes forcing areas to load, getting sent to jail, talking to npcs and entering various buildings. I had no problems aside from microstuttering. So no CTD which means....? At worst out in the open world I get 45 fps and in building I get as much as 250fps if that means anything. If I use Alternate Start, is there an option to have it put me just outside Helgen? I'd like to continue the game as it was designed but I'm so sick of the wagon ride intro especially since it seems to crash the game.If I uncheck Skytest in the mods list of Mod Organizer then Bashed Patch. 0.esp turns red/orange in left panel of Wrye Bash and the masters update.esm, dragonborn.esm, hearthfires.esm and SkyTEST-realistic animals&predators.esm are orange/red. I'm more than happy to turn SkyTest mods off if it fixes the game but then what do I do to fix the bashed patch file?Nozzer66:So any mod that isn't green in Wrye Bash I should run through Tes5Edit and tell it to sort masters correct? I checked RaceMenu and there is a grey bolt of lightning. The list of mods it says it's conflicting with is VERY long. I'll add a picture to my imgur album to give you an idea of some of the files. I did notice a couple things. First, I have both RaceMenu and RaceMenu v2-9 in my mod list which seems odd and I also noticed that the files for RaceMenu are in the optional bottom panel, should I move them up to the top panel (see new pics)? When I do the lightning bolt turns yellow with a little red minus sign.I just wanted to say I really appreciate the help from both of you. I know it's frustrating to try to explain this to someone who isn't familiar with the code. All this is basically gibberish to me, I just do what you tell me to but I have no idea how it affects things or why. I'm sorry if I'm being dense about this stuff, I really am trying to understand but it's just not my area of expertise. So thank you again for your patience!

oh... you need a fps limiter and/or v sync... I recommend use only vsync but your results may vary

In enblocal:

[ENGINE]EnableVSync=trueVSyncSkipNumFrames=0

For the alternate start the closest one is something like "I was camping in the woods"

Any time you disable a mod or change Load Order... ALWAYS rebuilt Bashed Patch and any sort of dynamic SkyProc Patchers (DRS) and FNIS... If you know what you are precisely doing sometimes you can skip a step but a majority of the time never skip it.

Debugging one's game is kinda tricky... Generally, its really obvious but others not so much.

Why do you have two racemenus?

All you need is RaceMenu v2-9-1...

I also think the pre-cache killer is redundant with a proper RaceMenu install..

I installed step for patch making and also I have also found the mod installation to be tricky

Rebash the patch if you need. It's not difficult and is quick to do.

And yes, that's what I was saying. Sort masters on anything non green.

WIth the Racemenu thing. 2-9-1 is the current version. It's just a little unusual that you'd have it in there twice. The one that's totally greyed out could just be unclicked in the left pane. Seeing how it's totally overwritten.

I doubt you're missing masters, cause if you were you'd likely CTD at the Skyrim menu, not at chargen or entering the keep.

We'll keep punching on this. We'll squsih the bug somehow. :)

I rebuilt the patch and the bash file is green now, I think. When you say all the files need to be green do you mean that the check box next to it needs to be green or the file name? Because in Wrye Bash, some file names are blue, some are green and some are black but they all have a green check box and green checkmark next to them.
