Wiki Editor Bugging Out

TechAngel85

Question

So, I've been working on the wiki a lot lately and for the most post I haven't thought much of it; however, it seems to be happening more often. While editing, every once in a while the editor will not load properly as seen in the image below. You can still edit and save your work without issue; however, I just thought I'd mention it in case it's something that actually should be looked into.

Issues like this are generally due to javascript not fully loading. Can you think of something you are doing that may interrupt a full page load? Also, what browser are you using? Any plugins for said browser that may interfere with scripts from loading, or any security software recently installed?

I've tested a few pages and haven't seen an issue yet.

This kind of thing happens to me now and then as well .. Firefox, normal editing. Probably just due to MW inefficiencies.

I also hate the wait to load the editor. It first loads and then 'loads again'. This happens every single time, and I am wondering if it is a setting in my prefs. I have tried to fix to no avail. Again, the editor loads, I begin typing, and it loads again, with a slight format change (wider window I think, and I lose my first micro-edits... really a PITA).

now and again, it fails to load our styled full editor as Tech notes above.

Anyone that does a lot of wiki editing will notice.

I use Chrome

Yes I know its memory Hungry

I have actually gotten a few 504's within the last week. Sometimes the wiki seems to...crawl.

I've gotten one, I think... Which ever one is the gateway could not be located or something rather....

The long load time after saving is due to the Wiki rebuilding the page cache which it has to do after every edit, as well as saving information for the edit (diff of changes) for the history. It's what allows regular page views afterwards to be much faster.

504 errors are due to timeouts, which could be at any point in the chain from the web server, to the database. For those that get 504 errors, do they occur during specific time ranges, or are they random?

for me absolutely random except it happens to both the wiki and the forums and will last about 30 sec... Like the site is refreshing something...

Google an other load up just fine...

EDIT: I should clarify in the 30 sec I load up a page and it takes awhile to load and then gives up, I then refresh and it just waits until it finally loads

I just did 50 page edits on random pages and didn't see an issue. The editor loads lightening quick each time.

One guess is a cache issue, in that the javascript is not caching in your browsers. For firefox you can check the following by typing "about:config" in the address bar. Click the button that says you will be careful, and search for the following settings:

network.http.use-cache

browser.cache.offline.enable

They should both be true.

If they are true, will have to brainstorm a little more.

EDIT: If any of you get to the point that the Wiki Editor display is reproducible, you might want to open up the debugger (Ctrl-Shift-S) and profile a page load.
