UI issues and lost perks

DanielCoffey

Question

I have noticed that my Drink, Food and Sleep percentages on my UI always stay at zero no matter how long I play for. Is this a factor of the game difficulty setting or do I have to turn on Needs somewhere?

Secondly, the Comprehension perk is not being activated when I select it at level up. My choice is registered and I can close the level up screen but I am not being given the perk. When I hit the next level up, the perk was back again ready to be chosen and I only got the standard points from reading a Book. I have been diddled out of a perk point this way twice now and I am interested in awarding myself the points back (it is that or a restart). Other perks are being selected properly... it is just Comprehension so far that is not working. FNVedit shows no conflict with that perk but I wondered if a bashed patch issue was showing here?

EDIT : I have remembered a third oddity which may be related to the alternate start I chose. Victor was not present in Goodsprings. I picked Courier and Goodsprings and started outside Doc's house but there was no sign of Victor, either around the town or in his hut. Is this usual? I am assuming I will next bump into him in Novac.

Did you go to a DLC area? It tends to reset the hardcore needs values until you sleep. It's a game bug that hasn't been fixed yet.

The perk thing is bothersome since I've never heard of that happening. It might be something from PN Rebalance. What are your settings for any MCM settings that mess with leveling and perk points?

Alternative STart messes with the beginning of the game in that way to get around starting in Doc's house.

I have not hit the DLC areas yet as I have just started a new game. I have certainly slept several times and woken up with 0% in all three values.

I will check levelling and perk settings in the morning as the PC is off at the moment. I assume that since I have missed out on two perks already, a restart is in order? I had only dealtt with Primm and the first visit to Novac so it is no big loss.

I can certainly do without Victor as long as he turns up eventually.

I have to thank you for putting Willow in the mod list. I have already found the first quest throwing me a curve ball... The chaps she was asking me to follow have arrived at their destination (where, presumably, they have now teamed up with extra friends). I was not expecting the mod to be so well constructed. I am looking forward to seeing what she has me do next.

Oh, one more issue... I know there will be neck seams which is why the necklace mod is in the load order but I have seem quite a few raider bodies with grossly mismatched skin colour between the head and body. One example was the chap in the Nipton General Store (who the Legion have tortured). He had the bruised and battered dirty body but a clean face (albeit with one black eye). I have seen several powder ganger corpses with coloured skin and white faces. Is this caused by something I have installed wrongly?

FCO is probably why the skin mismatched. It should be better in the next version of FCO. Drumber is doing v3.0 right now. Some of the problem is also from NVR3. Getting bash tags to work properly between LOOT and Wrye Flash will also help solve the problem. Some of them don't get forwarded and going through each mod and assigning them manually is a too tedious.

Perks can be added by console. Player.addperk <formID> 1 I believe is the code, but you may need to look it up. Also, Player.AddSkill <skill name> <amount> is the skill code, but again these are from memory.

That comprehension perk thing is really weird. Maybe the Courier start already had it included. I'll look into it when I have a little time.

As for the needs, I may have to look at the mods that affect that to get a better idea. Are you able to see them at anything other than 0% in the pipboy? Do you have Imps More COmplex Needs installed?

OK, I have reinstalled FCO and NVR3 to make sure I had done everything properly with a new LOOT sort and Bashed Patch. I will check for mismatched bodies/heads when I next play.

I tried adding the Comprehension perk with "player.addperk 31de1 1" and saw the message that Comprehension rank 1 was added. Despite a re-log it did not appear in the Pipboy list of perks. I still get the vanilla number of points from a book and magazine. I had Science 30, read a Big Book of Science and went to 33. Read a Programmer's Digest and went to 43. Comprehension is not present.

For the Needs, I have no mods that are not listed in the guide. I do not have Imps More Complex Needs. I did however discover that I did not select Hardcore Needs when I created the character. The Guide did not mention this setting. I  read about needing to eat/drink/sleep but also saw the ammo weight which I prefer to play without. I now understand that this is why I don't see the Needs increasing. I have two choices here - I can turn it on and have to manage ammo weight or I can leave it off and roleplay the eat/drink/sleep and I think this is what I will settle for. Sorry for the mixup on this point.

That Comprehension perk thing is really weird. I've never heard of that one. I usually take that perk to when I play to help speed up leveling when I test.

For the Hardcore needs, I never added anything about it because I just assumed people knew about it since it was in the default game. You may have to look for a mod that applies only the needs and not the weight to ammo in hardcore mode. You can disable the needs with iHUD/extraHUD/aHUD MCM menus.

There might still be a few mismatched bodies until the next version of FCO. The author is adding more custom stuff for bodies to match his heads.

What is odd about Comprehension is that it is unmodified by anything - it is a vanilla perk. That was why I was wondering if there was a bashed patch issue with the perks. The game clearly knows about it since it will say it has given me the Perk when I add it and it appears in the available perks list (even if I have chosen it) but it won't display in the PipBoy list and won't apply its effects to reading books and magazines.

I don't understand how that's happening. DId you load the entire mod list in xEdit? Sometimes the Bashed Patch will forward a few records on accident and create ITMs, but they are irrelevant since it loads last. I searched for problems related to that and I can't figure it out. There is something that just isn't very obvious that we might be missing.

FNVedit loads the full list of mods perfectly with no Perks visible in the bashed patch but while I was going through the list of mods looking for anything to do with perks I did find some possible conflicts...

Project Nevada - All DLC overwrites changes made by YUP - Base Game + All DLC with the perks Hearless and Cardiac Arrest. I wondered if some sort of Conflict Resolution patch was needed?

There was another perk conflict between YUP - Base Game + All DLC and EMR - StealthSuitMkII with Stealth Suit MKII perk.

I was wondering if it could be something to do with there just being too many perks? How many entries can there be in a perks table? So many of the mods add perks that could we be tipping over some limit?

The Project Nevada conflict is okay, PN should win since it changes stuff that relies on it being different from vanilla. YUP just fixes the vanilla version.

The Stealth Suit conflict is the same thing. It changes the suit, basically an overhaul of that suit and should override YUP since it fixes the vanilla version.

I've done some searching for anything ever related to the Comprehension perk and can find nothing like it. All issues seem to be with the Educated perk. I am honestly stumped. Sorry, but I don't know what it could be messing up just that perk. Have you tried taking another perk since the Comprehension and seeing if it has the same issue?

Thanks for explaining about the perk conflicts.

I have actually started a new playthrough today and will see what happens when I hit level 4 again. I will take a level up save and do some tests. If it still does it, I may just ignore that perk and give myself something else. I can always duplicate its effect by altering the bonuses given by the magazines once I hit level 4.
