CTD vs. ILS - stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Hello all and sundry,

 

I am having tons of random - and then persistent - crashes to desktop. 

I have multiple saves, and playing on one will be fine for a while, and suddenly it will catch 'CTD fever' or something, and then almost anything will trip it up; simply hitting ESC to save will crash it.

I change to a different character, and the pattern repeats. Changing to an earlier save will fix the problem. Temporarily.

 

I spent some time searching this forum's posts, and it seems that Safety Load will cause problems with SkyUI GUIs, which is generally the problem i'm having. The catch though, is that i wasn't using Safety Load until a few days ago, this because i was having ILSs on every single one of my saves (indoor, outdoor, new game, whatever). Removing DynDOLOD helped somewhat, but Safety Load killed them outright.

 

So it seems i must settle with either CTDs or ILSs. Unless you people can help a brother out.

I've played with most of the commonly pointed at .ini settings, but none of them helped.

I'll be trying Memory Blocks Log later on, to see if that helps. And then i'll slowly work through the advanced ENB.ini guide on the STEP Guide.

The SKSE memory fix wasn't working and applying the '-forcesteamloader' argument fixed it. I can now save!

I'll do some more intensive testing though.

Definitely install and enable Memory Blocks Log and run through the game until it crashes. This should give you a good indication of whether you need to bump the block 1 allocation.

 

Modding and playing are contradictory endeavors... you can do one or the other, but not both.

I've only glanced at it as I don't have much time this morning and the only thing that really stuck out to me is that your AutodetectVideoMemorySize in enblocal.ini needs to be set to false.

Oh damn, yeah. That's one of the settings i was playing with, sorry. Must have forgot to revert it.

It doesn't seem like too much of a problem though as it reports a value of 4064MB, and doing it manually gives 6118 - 350 = 5768MB. Not a great discrepancy (to me, i might be wrong).

 

I'll be changing it back to manual anyway, as i go through the advanced guide step by step.

Hello again,

 

Turns out is was the memory blocks. No CTDs in a few hours on a few saves each - at all.

Next i removed Safety Load, and i only had a single ILS in two hours of play.

 

This memory patch is pure ice-cream :D

Does this mean you had to increase the DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB setting in SKSE.ini to solve the issue?

 

The reason I ask is because Memory Blocks Log just logs how much of block 1 (DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB) and block 2 (ScrapHeapSizeMB) are actively being used. It doesn't do anything else.
