Skyrim No Start, ENBoost Warning

aba42

Question

As far as I can tell, I have followed the STEP 2292 directions to a "T".  But, it won't start.  I get the initial screen, spinning logo, ready to select new, then a RED WARNING splashes onto the top of the screen stating that ENBoost Speed Hack is running without graphics.  As far as I can tell, those are the specific instructions for setting up enblocal.ini, aren't they?  As SOON as that flashes up on the screen, my hard drive light just stops.  So, I 3-finger salute, open Task Manager --> Skyrim Not Responding.  Does someone have time to look over my three main ini files, please?

In the skse_steam_loader.log, the third line from the end says:

config path = D:\Steam\steamapps\common\SKyrim\Data\SKSE\skse.ini

BUT, it should say Skyrim\mods\SKSE\skse.ini...should't it?  I just looked, there ISN'T a Skyrim\Data\SKSE folder!?

Similarly, in the skse_loader.log, the third line from the top says:

config path = D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\Data\SKSE\skse.ini

That folder and ini file don't exist.  I don't understand.

Please point me in the right direction for instructions on how to "Load a blank profile with just the vanilla assets in MO".

Thank you. Made no difference. "Skyrim Not Responding"

Try validating the integrity of the local game cache through Steam, as GrantSP suggested.

Also make sure the skse.ini in MO is in a folder named "SKSE".

Edit: MO uses a virtual Skyrim Data directory. As it is explained in the MO guide.

It's easy to get confused with these things. Just remember MO is "tricking" the game into seeing the files where the log says they are, even though they are actually installed somewhere else.

MO is a very different mod manager to anything else, it isn't surprising it takes some time to get your head around it. As @Nebulous112 says, it is all todo with the so-called VFS

Nebulous112, and Dragon Lord.  I sincerely apologize for never having used or edited ini files nor any of the software, nor this complicated an approach.  I am extremely frustrated.  Responses here imply that I should have obtained a degree in and memorized all of the manuals for all of the fine points for all of the tools that we're using.  If that's the case, fine; I'll be back in a few weeks.  The reason is that I'd REALLY like this to work...JUST ONCE.  Just give me one direction, and I'm out of here for tonight, as I give up.  I believe that there may be a problem with either skyrim.ini, skyrimprefs.ini, enblocal.ini (which is why I started this conversation to begin with) and, now, skse.ini and/or their interrelationships.  I have redone the S.T.E.P. process completely (after the masters) and converted all of the mods that I had erroneously unzipped back into bsas, and everything through every S.T.E.P. worked just fine, even the penultimate Dynamic Distant Objects LOD (57 min, 55 sec).  Anyway, please just tell me where you would like me to pose my question tomorrow, which specific forum, and I'll make sure that I set spoiler tags around anything and everything I submit.  Thanks.  Allen

No need to stand on formalities with me, Dragon Lord is just what I get my minions to call me, GrantSP is fine for everyone else. :;):

It seems daunting doesn't it? Don't worry, we aren't 'fobbing you off' (I hope that idiom translates well, I know what it means here in Australia.), we're trying to eliminate all the areas where there are NO problems.

What you have provided so far has been somewhat helpful and I think we can say the INIs and other setups are fine.

I'm very worried though about the crash reports from TESV.exe (the game itself).

In the Steam client open your library to Skyrim and 'right-click' the game and select 'Properties'. In the dialogue that opens click the 'Local Files' tab and then click the button to Verify Integrity of Game Cache.

Any problems with the base game files will be examined and new files will be installed. Nothing will happen to all the mods you have installed.

Let us know here what the result was. Best way to check afterward is to change your MO profile to one with just the vanilla files and run that, if all is well then we can re-visit the mods.

And, again, I ask, how do you change your MO profile to one with just vanilla files?  Or is that another RTFM, meaning that I really should just take a few weeks off and go memorize this stuff before I come back and bother you guys some more.  As for Cache Verification.  I've done that many times and, as usual, the only thing wrong was it never likes the settings it gives me, so when I restart the game after doing one of these, it always stops to see what my setting ought to be, and then assigns Ultra.  And, that's what happened tonight.  Allegedly one file (i.e., the settings) was messed up and will "be acquired".  Now, what manual am I supposed to read about how to set up a vanilla profile to one with just vanilla files?

When you were following the STEP guide, you are following the guide? It's been so long since the first post I can't recall, anyway the guide says in the MO instructions wiki to create a new profile in MO. This will mean there is another profile called 'Default' that contains NO mods and is just the base vanilla game.

Perhaps you can spend a few minutes acquainting yourself with the MO guide as a means to take your mind off this issue? Some of the things we are mentioning are indeed to be considered 'basic', such as how to change MO profiles.

You are absolutely correct, I shoulda knocked off much earlier than the 16 hours I'd already put in yesterday, and the day before, and the ....  Okay, fresh now, went to my Vanilla Skyrim MO load, ran it (the only thing is it's with the updated SKSE.ini and the enblocal.ini installed).  First, HOLY CRAP!  The difference in textures is already night and day, and I can't wait to get the dang thing started; second, it ran like a clock, nolo problemo.  My GTX 660Ti's pluggin' along just fine, and I rechecked the nVidia settings and they're all as instructed, as well.   It's only got the unmanaged Dawnguard, HearthFires, Dragonborn, all three HighResTexturePacks and SKSE loading.  Works perfectly.  So now what?

For some reason, Hearthfiresextended no longer contained a warning about runing TES5Edit, so I uninstalled it, and reinstalled it.  Question:  Do I need to then also uninstall and reinstall the STEP Compilation Patch, or just make sure that hearthfiresextended loads above STEP Compilation Patch?  The reason I ask is that, I reran LOOT, but it did not move it above the STEP Compilation Patch.  Thaniks!

Okay, so I've moved this topic to the General section as we are now moving away from diagnosing an ENB issue.

So to establish where we are now, you can safely run the game with no errors or crashes and certainly no Windows Event Viewer logs?

If yes then I suggest you slowly and systematically follow the STEP guide and install each mod in turn and after section, when it asks for a benchmark, run the game and check that no errors occur.

Feel free to report back here after each section is completed. Based on your previous stint I strongly suggest you limit your time in front of the computer to avoid any minor slip ups that might come back to "bite you on the backside".

Having just installed the guide from top to bottom myself only days ago, I can assure you doing it this way WILL provide you with an error free game.

Just to get past the obvious:

1. You do not have Skyrim or Mod Organizer installed under Program Files?

2. You made sure to manually add the three required metadata edits for LOOT?

3. Your Skyrim\Data folder contains nothing except what was originally in there right after first installing from Steam?

4. You only ever execute Skyrim by using the Mod Organizer SKSE Run?

5. You only installed a fresh download of enbhost.exe, enblocal.ini, and d3d9.dll into the Skyrim folder, and none of the other ENB files; as well as not using any of the files included with ENB Preset downloads?

6. You're running Windows 7? (3714 is the maxmimum possible value for VideoMemorySizeMb on Windows 8/10)

7. You only have the STEP mods installed, and no additional content from the STEP mods that was not specified in the instructions?

8. If you have multiple GPUs (for instance Intel Embedded + Nvidia), you have the correct one selected to render Skyrim?

9. You have run the Microsoft DirectX Redistributable to make sure your DirectX isn't corrupt? (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109)
